Cheick Kongo At UFC
... Cheick "Unstoppable" Kongo ...
Cheick "Kongo" is a heavyweight mixed martial artist currently fighting in the UFC. Some says that He is a lot like the Eiffel Tower : Tall, Well-built and from Paris...Of Course He is french and He fights out of the Fimeu Gym in France
Story
Kongo was born with martial arts in his blood, when just a child, he chose to follow in his older brother's footsteps by learning all of the secrets of Kendo and Karate under the master Marc Angevin. As he grew older, he would learn to master Muay Thai and Kickboxing and would also practice Greco-Roman Wrestling.
At age 19, he would discover the Penchak Silat and would then be coached by Charles Joussot and Franck Roppers who both realized he was no longer a child following the path of his older brother, but a unique athlete keen on writing his own history.
Professional
On June 10, 2001, Cheick Kongo began his professional career by knocking out Andre Tete. Kongo then followed up that win with a TKO over Dave van der Veen. He then lost his first professional MMA fight to Rodney Faverus by decision. CheickKongo was 6-1-1 when he entered the UFC to fight Gilbert Aldana at UFC 61, whom he beat by TKO due to a doctor stoppage. He followed up with a win over UFC newcomer Christian Wellish by KO due to a knee strike, before losing to .. newcomer Carmelo "The Fury" Marrero at UFC 64. Then, .. defeated Assuerio Silva by majority decision at UFC 70.
On September 8, 2007, in one of the most anticipated fights of UFC 75, Cheick Kongo made an amazing UFC appearance vs. Mirco "Cro Cop" Filipovic. Touted as "The most feared strikers in the UFC" Cro Cop was unable to connect with anything significant against the bigger, more impressive Kongo:
Cro Cop stalked Kongo throughout the first period but never found the range to land the left high kick that had made him a star in Japan and a cult hero amongst fight fans. In the second and third periods the muscular Frenchman moved forward, battering the smaller Filipovic with knees to the thighs and punches to the head. Cheick Kongo, also spent time working over him on the canvas, scoring with elbows and short chopping punches.
He scored the biggest win of his career by defeating Cro Cop by unanimous decision(29-28 x3).
Young and ambitious, Kongo has been dominating the competition as of late, and will no doubt be one of the strongest forces in MMA, K1, and Muay Thai.
Last Fight
In his latest MMA Bout, on March, 1, 2008, Cheick Kongo suffered a lost by split decision to Heath Herring at UFC 82 in Columbus, Ohio.
After the fight, UFC insidefighting journalist Michael DiSanto wrote :" Kongo elevates status in loss
Cheick Kongo is a vicious striker. He proved as much by undressing Mirko Cro Cop back in September.
But many believed in the weeks and months leading up to UFC 82 that he was just a one dimensional fighter. Heath Herring was so convinced of it that he openly admitted not spending even one training session on his ground game in preparation for this fight.
Whoops.
Kongo showed excellent wrestling and transitions throughout his battle with Herring, repeatedly taking down and reversing the veteran Herring. Nobody would have predicted that, and I’m still a bit shocked that it occurred.
Granted, his ground game still has a ways to go. Kongo had no answer for side control, something he desperately needs to develop if he wants to challenge Minotauro for the interim title. If he does, the sky is the limit for the most impressive physical specimen in the heavyweight division".
"A Battle Has Been Lost, But Not The War. I'm Still On Road For The Title, You Better Watch Out Cos I Am Ready And Hungry. More Than Ever ..."
