Music Speaks The Unspeakable

About Me

Hey all! I am (as the title says) an aspiring film composer currently working freelance... Music is just in me. It's that simple. I am originally from Wexford, Ireland and I come from a very strong musical background: my father was a musician, all my brothers and sisters play instruments and have appeared (like myself) in operatic productions (1997 performance of Ottorino Respighi's 'La Fiamma') school, town & church choirs. From as far back as I can remember, I have have been engrossed in some form of music, whether I happend to like that music was irrelevant! Every morning I would hear my older brothers pop a third album into the disc tray of their players, subsequently waking the entire house! Funny how ten years later, I would do the exact same thing every morning: breakfast? Nah! I'll put on an album! It was only when I watched James Cameron's 'The Terminator' at the age of 11 that I really found something in music that I had never before: the film score. After this, I added piles and piles of movie score CDs to my fledgling collection, keeping this, I thought at the time, weird little obsession to myself. I was fascinated at the skill and genius and the ability of the composer to create textures and percussive beats and seemingly insignificant pieces of sound effects and somehow weave them all together to create meaning. I listened through my Sennheisers for many years, breaking down an Elfman or a Fiedel score, all the while amazed at how they achieved such thrilling , evocative pieces with, seemingly, relative ease.I knew software and equipment would be expensive, so I had to make do with rather limited PC and Playstation 2 software to flesh out early ideas. If I wanted vocals in a track, like a rousing choral sound, I'd just record myself in four or five different octaves and alter the sounds to make it sound like a choir! Eventually, I managed to get hold of some equipment, and set up a 'mini-studio' in my bedroom (well, we all have to start somewhere!!). Since then, I have composed for three short films and have just completed work on Amber Pictures' Sci-Fi Horror 'Bane' (2008 release) & French short film '2.0' (Art. H Productions). American vampire flick 'Until The Sun Goes Down (Brothers Grimm Productions) is also in the pipeline with hopefully ALOT more to boot! I am also studying for a Degree in Film & Television at the University Of Wales, Aberystwyth, and self-teaching myself Music Theory in the evenings after a dreadful day at work!!
