SOPHIE WACHENDORFFS IKI DÜNYA TRIO
A Nordic Voice With A Turkish Heartbeat
Winner of Creole-Worldmusic-Award Niedersachsen 2006/2007
Winner of German Worldmusic Award RUTH 2001
Two worlds (in Turkish: iki dünya) meet in the exciting repertoire of this acoustic trio from the north of Germany, focussing the listener's ear on the striking voice of their female leadsinger. Sophie Wachendorff sings in Turkish and although she has exclusively German family roots, her authentic singing-style has caught German and Turkish audiences alike. She showed her talents at the "WDR Europafestival" and at the "Voice of Asia-Festival" in Alma-Ata/Kasachstan as well as on smaller club stages. Iki Dünya is the only German group that has been invited into the Turkish pavilion on the world trade fair EXPO 2000. Iki Dünya takes new chances, refreshing the Turkish genre by creating an untypical but distinctive sound around the Turkish soul and heartbeat of Sophie Wachendorff's voice. The chosen acoustic line-up with acoustic guitar and clarinet is quite uncommon in Turkish music. A strong, creatively woven musical carpet (in Turkish: kilim) carries the vocals into a tense and unique dimension. Iki Dünya plays original compositions, arranges modern Turkish songs and renews traditional material. Openminded for crossing cultural music structures, they respectfully draw from oriental roots and contemporary idols, such as Turkish vocal icon Sezen Aksu. Iki Dünya is undoubtly a western band which develops an atmospheric mixture of Orient and Occident by blending Turkish vocals with worldopen accompaniments. Innovative and yet recognizable, easy for western ears, their sound is sometimes minimalistic, but always energetic. Intense ballads are followed by catchy uptempo songs. Iki Dünya is not a copy of any group performing in Turkey. It's an original. The original composition "Doya Doya" has been chosen to appear on the German music association PROFOLKs 4th CD-Sampler "Pearls for a New Century" (2000), along with 17 more songs from different topgroups presenting the genre of "Songs, Folk & Worldmusic made in Germany". The trio was the winner of the German Folk-Award contest 2001, they played Europes biggest worldmusic festival in Rudolstadt, where broadcasted from Berlins IFA 2001 and performed on the 26th Bardentreffen Festival in Nürnberg, Germanys leading festival for Song and Music. Sophie Wachendorff has also been featured on stage by Belgiums No. 1 acapella group „Voice-male“ and Turkeys leading percussionist Okay Temiz. Quite recently Iki Dünya won the Creole-Wordmusic-Competition 2006/2007 in Niedersachsen and is now qualified to be part of the German finals in May 2007.
