In 1994, Tony B. (1975) and Daniel S. (1975) formed their DJ- and producer-combo Smash FX. Even in 1992,
as first-generation Ravers, their primary love was Breakbeats. Back then already, they bought Vinyl and made
their first attempts at mixing. Before the days of Drum n' Bass, when this style was still known as "UK Hardcore", Smash FX already played
the records of labels like Knite Force, Suburban Bass or Impact Records. At this time, there was almost no
interest in this type of music in Switzerland, and thus, bookings were rare. But still, Smash FX stayed true to
their path and refused to let the more commercial trends of those days influences them. Their first DJ appearances together took place in a room upstairs at the old Palais X-Tra in 1994. As the Breakbeat movement began heading towards Drum 'n Bass and the BPM count rose, Smash FX began searching
for something new. In 1996, a new style of music called "Big Beat" was born. Particularly the Chemical Brothers' debut album is considered to have had a shaping effect on this style. This sound was fresh and new at the time, but quickly became formulaic and vanished again. Smash FX kept pursuing their direction and tried to unite the various
facets of Breakbeat. A set by Adam Freeland in early 1998 at the Box Zu¨rich proved groundbreaking. It was the first Nu Skool Breaks set ever played in Zurich and was received surprisingly well. Nu Skool Breaks is a style of music that unites the best of existing genres, recombines them and enriches them with a healthy dose of innovation. Thus, influences of Drum 'n Bass, Hip Hop, Electro and Techno are present, while the tempo remains at a dancy 130 BPM. Nu Skool Breaks is a worldwide development: it's taking a hold on the USA as well as Australia. But the big breakthrough of Smash FX were the weekly "Ocean Club" evenings at the UG Zu¨rich, where they're
resident DJ's. "Ocean Club" is the first periodical Breakbeat event in Switzerland and enjoys a continuously growing popularity. Over 400 people come by on a regular basis and the atmosphere is among the best Zurich has to offer at the moment. DJ’s like Adam Freeland, Freq Nasty, Hyper, Meat Katie, Soul of Man, Krafty Kuts or The Freestylers already rocked the crowd in the UG club. Smash FX released Switzerland’s very first Breakbeat mix cd in november 2002. Their trademark track “Brainkiller†was released in march 2003 with an amazing Remix from Australias Breakbeat star EK on Switzerland’s internationally respected Ritmic Records. Their remix of Vostok’s Airplanes is part of the Swiss Tools EP, released in december 2002, also on Ritmic Records. In 2004 Smash FX remixed Sens Unik Producer Just One’s single “Overdriveâ€. The future is bright for Smash FX: They have different residencies in some of Switzerland’s finest clubs, they
are going to play gigs in USA, Brasil and Asia. They are always busy in the studio too, so expect some good new
tracks in the next year! Stay tuned!
