When I asked Kimmie three years ago if I could make a film about her life, I knew I was asking a hell of a lot. First off, she was only 17 at the time, and here's this dude in his thirties asking her if he could follow her around with a camera for a couple of years. I met Kimmie through her dad, Billy. Billy was my friend and one of my first teachers in magic. Yes, Billy was a professional magician, as am I. He managed the Magic Shop on Long Island for like, twenty years!!! He would bring his daugter, Kimmie into the shop when she was a little kid. Kimmie pretty much grew up in the Magic Shop. One morning, Billy's wife Cathy dropped him off at the shop. She left, and a about an hour later got a phone call telling her Billy had collapsed. Cathy raced back to the shop, but by then , Billy had already died. His heart gave in. It was sudden, and totally unexpected. Billy's death sent shock waves through the magic community. Cathy and Kimmie were suddenly alone and their world would never be the same.
More than just a great father, Billy was Kimmie's best friend. And for Cathy, Billy was truly the love of her life. The situation was devestating.We started filming. Like all documentary filmmaking, it was slow going at first. A level of trust must be established and in this case, that trust needed time and patience to grow. When it did, Kimmie and Cathy opened up their lives to the camera in ways I could never have dreamed. The subject matter made it a difficult shoot. Emotions were running crazy and in all directions. A year and a half later, we were finished.I am extremely proud of this film, and of Kimmie and Cathy for their level of honesty and commitment to the project. I know it wasnt easy.We're all still good friends. Kimmie and me, and my friend Rob, are working on a screenplay now. All I can say at the moment is that it's original, and intense!!!
