There's a dark corner of Craigslist called Casual Encounters, where anyone can post an ad for a one night stand. One night I tested the validity of this site, by posting a fake ad, seeing if anyone would reply. I said I was a 27 year old artist from Venice, looking for someone to cover in paint and screw on a canvas. This was at 2am on a Tuesday. By 2:15, I had 30 replies. By 3:00, I had over 150. By 8:00am, there were over 500.
Over 500 people in the los angeles area wanted to be covered in paint and had sex with. Their emails were pitches, telling me why I had to choose them over all the other applicants. Many of them emailed from their work email addresses. Many more attached pictures of their penises.
To be fair, who knows if all 500 people were emailing sincerely. As I had hid behind the anonymous curtain of the internet, who is to say that these people didn't do the same. But if I had actually called any of them, or met up (I actually had wanted to call all 500 and tell them to meet at the same place at the same time) these films might have been different. As of right now, all I can say is that we were hoping to be truthful to the brash and brunt personas that these shadows forced upon our inbox, and explored the weirdness and oddity that internet culture has created.
