About Me

Sailing background: Grew up in Mandeville, LA, learned how to sail in Sunfish. Moved on to GYA events in Flying Scots and PHRF events in Buffalo Soldier (Olson 30), Kaya (J35), Creole Cookin' (Lindenberg 28) and other leadmines.College sailing: Tufts University, primarily sloop events (J 22's, Rhodes 19's and IOD's)Gmunden, Austria 1994 Trias Europeans (3 person keelboat similar to an Etchells)Post College: middle crew Lightning when I lived in Chicago and Iowa, FJ's at Iowa Sailing Club. Raced 5o5's for the last 5 years or so.Setting up this site to post events I plan on sailing in the upcoming season (see calender for planned regattas) and to let possible drivers and crew know more about me (past results in blog). I'm about 170 lbs., I'm pretty flexible on keelboats, able to handle foredeck, trim or call tactics. My current sailing program (which seems to change on a weekly basis):1.Sunfish racing on GYA Circuit & national events if scenic 2. Crewing OPB's on the Melges 24 SE Circuit (currently on Hermes) 3. Sailing scots on the GYA Capdeville schedule. 4. Crewing OPB's in PHRF- GYA Challenge Cup, etc. 5. Get into A cat racing & cat Portsmouth racing in Florida and the GYA 6. Crew/ drive 505's when invited

My Interests

sailing, hiking, camping, swimming, running

I'd like to meet:

other sailors, also people who love music and have good bands to recommend

Music:

pretty broad here- I like everything from Sting, Led Zeppelin and the Stones to Pete Yorn, Vertical Horizon and the Cranberries. New Orleans music (Cowboy Mouth, Radiators). Grew up in the 80's, so I like the old Depesche Mode & alternative sound from the early 90's too. Not a huge fan of country, rap or R&B (although I like the Dixie Chics and Eminem)

Movies:

big sci-fi fan- Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc. Like spy thrillers (Bourne Identity, Ronin, etc.), Italian Job, Ocean's Eleven. Also like the John Hughes 80's movies, Airplane, Ferris Buehler's Day Off. Been too busy to get to the movies much lately, mostly catching on dvd

Television:

Once again, Sci-fi: Heroes (writer and star from my alma mater), Battlestar Gallactica, Lost, Bionic Woman, Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dr Who. But in reality, not much time to watch the boob tube.

Books:

currently reading, in no particular order, The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, Sail Smart by Buddy Melges, The Sunfish Bible, Sail, Race, Win by Eric Twiname, and about 5 more in the queue

Heroes:

my dad, Paul Elvstrom, Dennis Conner, Michael Schuhmacher (7 F1 champs!), Krister Bergstrom (never met him, but 5 5o5 world champs!), Marcel Buffet (2 5o5 world champs (1959 & 1960) and still racing)

2008 Sunfish Mid Winters

Results at www.stabyc.org 25 of 40- not bad for my first big sunfish event, and the fact that I’m not really much of a single-handed dinghy sailor.  Also, been in the boat for 8 months afte...
