INTRODUCING
SOPHIA BROWN
Beautiful, Talent and extremely passionate about music would be the best way to describe the 5ft 3ins dynamo vocalist simply styled Sophia Brown.
A full pledged performer by choice its debatable whether her singing is better than her dancing or vice versa but make no mistake it is as a singer that she aims to make an even more definitive mark in both the local and international arenas. "I want to be the first female reggae artiste to win the coveted Grammy Award". Sophia got her first introduction to the world of entertainment as a dancer and with her exceptional skills in choreograph she created dance moves to songs for some of Dancehall's top pioneers namely Barrington Levy, Little John and Michael Palmer.
Her talent as a singer soon came to the forefront after a progressive relationship with the Jamaica Tourist Board developed into her doing live performances on what was then called the Appleton Estate Tour. Supported by her family and friends Sophia left her St. Elizabeth home in 1988 to live in St. Catherine a short distance away from the music capital of Jamaica, Kingston. A very realistic person, she began to realized that every journey begins with a first step, and for Sophia Brown that momentous first step was taken in 1991 when she recorded her first song.
The Outa National produced single "Jig Mi" was a harmonious track that proved a satisfactory introduction to the music industry, giving Sophia her very first local listenership on radio. Recognition of her vocal abilities soon followed and in no time she was off to her first big shows performing on the same stage with top-rated reggae acts such as dancehall kingpin Shabba Ranks, Lady Patra, Frankie Paul, Richie Stephens and Doug E. Fresh.
Next was the international reggae festival in Montego Bay, Reggae Sunsplash. With the eyes of the world watching she gave a commanding yet gracefully set. That same year in 1992 a collaboration with the renowned Mad Professor from Europe flung open many doors for the singer and landed her recording projects across the globe starting with the Cayman Islands in 1995 where she voiced for Strawberry Records which later sold out to CMI Records.
Securing a four-year, four-album deal with CMI Sophia's accomplishments were soon cut short when the company crashed shortly after. None the less she stayed focused and managed to form an alliance with Dale Dunkley of Music Mecka, the production house which was responsible for a host of her later releases such as "Baby Tonight" and "Give it Up" both of which enjoyed favorable airplay and brought her back into the spotlight.
In the years preceding Sophia took to the road and did several tours in and around the Tri-State area of New York, Arizona and Virginia. She's been on the same stage with hip hop greats Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, and Jah Rule.
Coming back home to Jamaica Sophia has decided to concentrate on her own career and during the summer of 2007 she recorded what would become her biggest single to date. "Love You Pure" was a tasteful Reggae / R&B track inspired by the everyday problems that affect a man and woman relationship. "That song came about one day when I was talking to a friend who was going though a few challenges in his personal life. Afterward listening I was inspired to write about what he was going through. It was a beautiful song that in the end captivated alot of hearts especially those of people going threw difficult times in their love life and now it's like a Valentine's Day Classic". A video for the single was release during the last weeks of November and eventually climbed its way to the number 3 spot of local CVM TV E STRIP Charts.
A new year now underway Brown has already positioned herself to break mainstream this with a distribution deal from several online music retailers which include Rhapsody.com, Apple I Tunes and Sprint Music Downloads.
Her new single "I'm a Rose" is also now out and is featured on an exclusive Cell Block / Music Mecka produced Riddim. The track which was mixed by the great Steven Stanley is the second official single from Brown who has been getting rave reviews and features in top local Magazine Prints like Panache Ja & Buzz Magazine.
Determine to see her musical goals through to the end Sophia has time and again promised to maintain her charismatic approach to what sometimes can become an unfair business. In March she took to stage and gave a memorable performance at Portland Splash and in April is slated to sing for charity at the inaugural Women's Day Mediathon / Concert.
"The future for Sophia Brown looks bright (laughs), I believe that I can touch the world with my music. I feel strongly as an artist my responsibility is to differentiate fact from fiction and also do my best to bring people together with positive lyrics".
Look out for debut album for Vizion Sounds out of South America later this year
