My name is Renée. I have a beutiful little girl named Lorelei. She was born January 28th, 2003. 7lbs 9 oz healthy and full of life. On february 13th 2003 my daughter was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome. I would like to use this page to help raise awareness about this issue, and to try and give more information to those who want it.Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a result of being physically shaken by a caretaker. It usually results in death, and for those who do not die they suffer from numerous health conditions. Some major health concerns for children of SBS include brain damage, loss of vision, hearing loss, and a multitude of other problems, depending on the severity of the injury. My daughter was a mere 2 weeks and 2 days old, when she was shaken by her biological father. She spent six weeks in the hospital, on all kinds of machines and medicines. But she is a fighter, just like her mom. The first day I was told she would not live. The next week I was told she would never be able to be at home with me she would need to live in an institution. We fought together, I was by her side every day. She is now four years old living at home where she belongs. Her diagnosis is extensive. She has Cerebral Palsy, a seizure disorder, a feeding tube, loss of vision, poor ciculation, lack of nerve system control, (which causes her to have a hard time passing a bowel movement). She also has dislocated hips, tubes n her ears, and a lot of respiratory issues. She has had 5 surgeries thus far and is to have another in a month or two.I am sharing all of this with you not for sympathy, but for help in passing the word. There are many things that can lead to SBS. An underinformed caretaker, being stretched to thinly, not having enough patience, even not having a support system. I will do my best to fill my sight with valuable links and information. Please take this knowledge and share it with everyone.
