RIPHOUSE formed in 1985, when bassist/vocalist MIKE CLANCY contacted guitarist JOE GALVIN and set out to form a speed metal band. When the original drummer failed to meet expectations the two enlisted JIM DEMARIA (drummer extraordinaire), who was officially added to the HOUSE in February 1988. The trio quickly began playing live shows and recorded their first demo in April of 1988.
"JOIN THE FAMILY," was recorded at Sleepy Hollow Studios in Westchester County, NY. Sales were in the hundreds in the tri-state area for the five song demo which included the songs: “BACARDI 151,” “DEGLAMMERIZER,” “BIG BOX BITCH,” “RIPHOUSE,” and “WARRIORS MARCH.” Six months later the band added another song, “SQUARE WORLD,” to the demo.
It was at their live shows where the RIPcrew really showed their stuff. Their music has been described as no-nonsense and energetic. In July 1988 RIPHOUSE played to 1,000+ people at the Metro North Cancer Benefit. With their popularity growing, it made the area's promoters take notice of the band. They began to book RIPHOUSE with national and international acts such as D.R.I., GWAR, KREATOR, MUCKY PUP, HOLY TERROR, GOTHIC SLAM, FLOTSAM & JETSOM, LAAZ ROCKIT, MIND FUNK, MEANSTREAK, and BIOHAZARD.
While writing new material in 1989, RIPHOUSE felt the need for a second guitarist. They approached former TORMENT axman, JON ELEAZAR, who was the final addition to the HOUSE. His guitar work brought a more powerful and dynamic sound to the band. From October to December of 1989, RIPHOUSE recorded their second demo.
"RIPHOUSE II: THE FAMILY DIES!" was another six song effort. It was recorded on a sixteen track machine and digitally mixed in Suffern, NY. The demo contained classics such as: "R.A.D.," "G.B.A./PROPAGATE," "WAR OF THE WORLDS," "RIPHOUSE II: THE FAMILY DIES!," "SPEED METAL BLUES," and a re-recording of "BIG BOX." The songs on this demo showed a distinct growth both musically and lyrically, with themes that range from drug use to media manipulation to AIDS and domestic violence.
Throughout the early ‘90’s RIPHOUSE continued playing live shows across the Northeastern United States. They were invited to play at the Atlantic Records Showcase in 1990. That same year the band wrote and recorded a four song EP entitled, “THE CAT STARVES.” This collection of songs included, “CIRCLES,” “NO POLICE STATE,” “THE BIG E (EVIL ALL AROUND US),” and “EXISTANCE REFUSED.”
With their thoughtful and unique music, RIPHOUSE was destined to be a dominant force in the speed/thrash metal scene. In 1991 the band began gaining offers from several independent record labels, most notably GRUDGE RECORDS. While writing and recording new material in 1991 founding member MIKE CLANCY became disenchanted with the musical lifestyle and left RIPHOUSE to pursue other interests.
