Its members are: Ras Moshe on woodwinds, Dave Ross on guitar, Chris Sullivan on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums. We will perform at this year's Vision Festival on June 23, and we have recently received the 2007 Manhattan Community Arts Grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; that performance will be held this fall. Influences: Mary "Chick" Reeder, master seamstress and my great aunt; I used to watch her sew for folks when I was very young. We also worked in the garden together. The next visual artist I knew while still young and who I saw work was Muriel Harris, painter and sculptor, who still lives on 148th street near Broadway, where I used to visit her. Painter Claude Clark Sr., who taught at Grove street College in Oakland in the early 70s, knew figures from the Harlem renaisance and communicated them to me, and inspired me to BE what I was DOING. He turned me onto Nigerian and West African visual and spiritual concepts, carving techniques and tools. My son, Amon Bey -our children are big influences! Jimi Hendrix. The Motherfuckers. Delta Blues musicians. Duke Ellington. The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Black Bear Ranch -one of the most notable communes in Northern California. The Tin Palace. The East Village until the beginning of the 1980s. Dane Rhudyar, astrologer, rennaissance man and George Jackson, Soledad Brother; I read their books at the same time when I was 20. Astrologers Marc Edmond Jones, Robert Hand, Reinhold Ebertin, Michael R. Meyer, and many others. Photo credits: Most photos and videos are by Amir Bey; other photographers are Paul Alkebulan, Amon Bey, Hauser Glass Company, Kazuko Miyamoto, Susan Robeson, Noah Rollins, Chris Tellez, and Saco Yasuma.RECORD
