Africa has been hit harder by the HIV/AIDS virus than any other region of the world. More than 17 million Africans have died from AIDS and another 25 million are infected with the HIV virus, approximately 1.9 million of whom are children. Sub-Saharan Africa had 30 million people living with HIV/AIDS by early 2003 after 3.5 million new infections in 2002. 2.4 million Africans died in 2002. 10 million young people (aged 15–24) and almost 3 million children under 15 are living with HIV. Very, very few with HIV or AIDS in Africa get antiretroviral treatment. Many millions are not receiving medicines to treat opportunistic infections.
