About Me

MICHAEL GENTILE began work in publication design after graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art, BFA '79. In the early 80s, as art director for the Baltimore and Washington, DC City Papers, he collaborated with artist John Ellsberry and created The Dork Brothers comics along with several films.
UNDER PRESSURE In the late 80s, he helps set up shop as founding art director for New York Press (1988-97). Continuing in the tradition of "underground papers", like the East Village Other, the paper provided a steady diet of edgy comics, photos, and illustration. “Press” Publisher Russ Smith, along with RAW creators art speigelman and Françoise Mouly, helped Gentile provide a roster of new and established artists. The laundry list included: Tony Millionaire, Julie Doucet, Ben Katchor, Patrick McMullan, Charles Burns, Kim Dietch, Mark Beyer, Marcellus Hall, JD King, Mark Newgarden, Steven Cerio, Ward Sutton, Peter Bagge, Carol Lay, M. Wartella, Chris Ware, Gary Panter, Mort Todd, Danny Hellman, Doug Allen, Gary Lieb, David Sandlin, Kaz, Paul Corio, Georganne Deen, Dame Darcy, Joe Coleman, Fly, and Debbie Dreschler, among many others. During his tenure, the "scrappy little downtown weekly" became the must read among the denizens of art, media and fashion.
RAMBLE ON His illustration and paintings have been featured in House and Garden, NYLON Magazine, New York Press, the Baltimore and Washington, DC, City Papers, LA Weekly, and New York-based Habitat Magazine. Gentile lives in New York and is art director for Habitat Magazine.
