About Me

This profile was edited with Thomas' myspace editorâ„¢ V2.5
Well...I don't really like these "About Me" things much because they're so broad, but it is about time updated it, so here I am.
I'm 19 and I'm from Seattle, Washington in the United States. I recently graduated from Henry M. Jackson High School and I am currently attending Edmonds Community College because I barely graduated high school. My only good grades were in classes like History, Philosophy, and English and plan to major in History and Theology.
That being said, History and Theology are two huge passions of mine. I was initially exposed to other religions and philosophies when I was four by my Dad, who exposed me to some of the basic concepts of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but also taught me about Buddhism and later some Hinduism as well as other elements of Eastern spirituality. I began studying on my own when I was 11 after my Dad exposed me to Islam through the music of Yusuf Islam, the former Cat Stevens. I have been studying history and theology ever since and have delved deeply into so many of the world religions, especially the way of life of Rastafari, due to my fascination with reggae music.
This ties directly into my next field of passion: Music. Ever since I was little, I've been obsessed with music, again thanks to my Dad. From an early age, I was listening to musicians like Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Sting, Sly & the Family Stone, the Spinners, Ray Charles, and Jimmy Cliff, who was my first exposure to reggae music. Again, as I got older, I began exploring more and more music on my own and deepened my connection to the artists I already knew and loved. Needless to say, this love of music and its meaning for me has been a cornerstone of my spirituality, especially in reggae music, as I mentioned above. I began to develop a real obsession with reggae when I was about 12 and cemented it when I was 13 with my exposure to Bob Marley & the Wailers. From there on, I began studying the history, development, style, and meaning of reggae music, as well as the lives of several of its artists and giants and the Rastafarian culture, with which I strongly identify. I listen to all reggae from the giants like Bob Marley & the Wailers, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & the Maytals to the lesser known greats like Johnny Clarke, Eric Donaldson, Ken Boothe, and Jacob Miller. Although reggae is certainly my favorite, I do deeply love other genres of music and hundreds of artists, some of which I have mentioned here and even more of which you can see in the "Music" portion of the "Interests" section.
I am currently an aspiring musician. I sing, write lyrics, and am a learning bassist. Both my love of History/Theology and Music have been my biggest fuel to write, which is something else I very much love to do. I also came to love reading as I got older as well.
I'll say up-front that I'm not much of a sports person with the exception of Boxing and Martial Arts. I took some Kung-Fu on and off for a few years and was inspired mostly by Bruce Lee. I fell in love with Boxing, and am currently doing so, because both my Dad and Grandfather were boxers, not to mention I was fascinated with the Rocky movies. I've been a devout Boxing fan since I became immersed in the sport a year ago. I love Boxing and Martial Arts because of the physical, spiritual, and mental discipline and because they teach self-defense.
Last but certainly not least among my passions is a powerful combined love of video games and anime. That's right; I'm a Geek and proud of it. My Dad worked at Nintendo for 17 years and I spent my childhood around video games and anime. I particularly love RPG's, Action/Adventure games, and Real-Time Strategy games. Some of my favorites include Final Fantasy VII (as well as most others in the series), Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2, EverQuest, StarCraft, and WarCraft III. You can find my favorite animes under the "TV" portion of the "Interests" section. Being a fan of both video games and anime, it's not hard to imagine, then, that I'm also a big fan of fantasy, such as The Lord of The Rings. No, I don't dress up, but I did attend SakuraCon this past year downtown and I loved it. I'll definately be going again.
I suppose that about sums it up. If you have any questions, feel free to message me!
Peace and love,
Spence
