Put Your Ear to Stone & Open Your Heart to the Sky

About Me

I've lived in Washington, DC, for the past 13 years and consider the nation's capital my home. I moved to DC, from Cleveland, OH, to work in the field of medical research. I found myself turning to communications, public/media relations and event planning for kicks and ended up starting a firm with one of my best friends. After a couple of years of running that business, I returned to school to complete a Masters of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics. I returned to communications and have been working on social justice issues in the nonprofit sector every since. I have a passion for working to better the human condition (and that's a true trial everyday) and try to better my own condition whenever I get the chance. I'm into yoga (I've been practicing for 2 years and try to do a little everyday, but take classes 4-6 times a week.)

I've lived and studied in Paris and Bruxelles, so I speak fluent French, which of course I have very little opportunity to use. I'd like to get back into public health eventually, but will stick with working to bring congressional voting representation to the residents of DC for now.

I love my friends above all, and am fiercely loyal to them - even when they don't necessarily deserve it :-) I'm 6'2", blue eyes, short brown hair. I have a tendency to write too much and never seem to cover the things that are probably much more important about who I am than the stuff I've written here. I'm 'complex' but understand that and deal with it...

My Interests

yoga (I'm currently undertaking a teacher training program), hiking (all of the sudden I can't get enough of hiking!), sending thank you cards, art (comtemporary - Keith Haring is my favorite), museums, writing (for myself), collecting odd, excentric things, literature (mostly Latin American), cheesy SciFi (Stargate - SG1 and Battlestar Galactica are like a religion) and, of course, a bizarre, lingering fascination with epidemiology...

I'd like to meet:

Bear Grylls!!

...or someone who'll actively join me as I journey to my edge and who'll bring me along on their journey too.

Music:

Cyndi Lauper, Kina, Billie Myers, Alison Moyet, Venus Hum, Dolly Parton, Kylie Minogue... I know what I like when I hear it, and my friend Shawn always knows what to send my way.

Movies:

9 to 5, Big Business, Stargate, Bring It On (okay, anything with Kirsten Dunst), The Color Purple, Gilbert Grape, Little Miss Sunshine, and so many others...

Television:

Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Stargate, Daily Show, Colbert Report, the Sarah Silverman Show, and actively working to reduce my television intake...

Books:

One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera (okay, everything by Garcia Marquez), In Praise of the Stepmother (again, everything by Llosa), Jorge Luis Borges, Albert Camus, Franz Kakfa, Dale Peck, Edmund White (earlier stuff more so than later stuff), Bret Easton Ellis, Laurie Garrett, Carlos Fuentes, etc...

Heroes:

Joey Cheek (his selfless giving of his Olympic winnings to the cause in Darfur is one of the most beautiful things that came out of the 2006 Games), anyone working to end the genocide in Darfur, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Charles Darwin, Robert F. Kennedy, Princess Diana, Nelson Mandela, the Reverend Desimond Tutu, and the thousands of nameless people who have worked and sacrificed to make the world just a little better by taking a stand against injustice and inhumanity.

Save Darfur - Stop Genocide

"Instead of mourning a genocide, what if we could stop one?" Today I gave 8 hours of my time volunteering for the Save Darfur Coalition for its upcoming Rally to Stop Genocide on Sunday, April 30. The...
