In short: Who am I?
I'm a Bass Player,
Actor in research theatre and
sounds, sound technician = MUSIC@TTORE (In Italian it means
"musicactor").
I'm making my music on stage while I'm acting or reading. It's a kind of musical
performance.
Usually I work with loops that I create by the fly using my laptop and a remote
foot pedal. I've connected many mics and instruments to my audio interface and
do anything live as you can hear from any examples that I've uploaded. Post me
any comment if you want to.
A little bit of my artistic life
I was born in 1971 in Bolzano/Bozen witch is in South
Tyrol (Italy) near on the frontier to Austria. This means that I speak nearly
perfectly to languages. For my English knowledge I've to thank my English
teacher on the College... and of course my love for in English sungen
songs.
I begun playing the bass when I was 14 years old with my cousin. There where
other two guitar players and nobody played the bass... so...
I became a Bass player. Obviously, as I liked rock music, I've had to teach
myself or learn from other musicians by copying or studying there performances.
I a short time I played with many bands in South Tyrol. I don't know whether it
was because I was a good bass player or because in South Tyrol there are not so
many bassists, but I swear that there was periods in witch I played in 10 bands
at the same period.
The first band with my cousin Luca and his friend Till was called NABLA.
Other bands I played with: GREYHOUND, EVELYN, GARLIC, WERNER BAUHOFER & CO.,
STADTKAPPELLE BOZEN, RED CHANNEL RATS and many others.
...then I went to Bologna to study music at the UNIVERSITY (Università degli Studi di Bologna, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Corso di Laurea in
D.A.M.S. Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo).
At the beginning I had many problems with this new situation. I was a very
active Bass player but here in Bologna Ii didn't play very often. The lessons
at the University were very theorical and most of all based on history...
nothing for me, no modern music (the most modern music they talked of was Jazz
since Dizzy Gillespie) I was bored of all this. Since I decided to take
interested in theatre and music Anthropology. This were very interesting things
because they talked about men in action and culture as an instrument to change
the world.
So I decided to stop playing the bass for a while
and began playing
experimental theatre and I took part of a group of improvising vocalist. because
I wanted also being able to use my voice (that why I think that even the body
is an instrument). The vocalist group was called "Teatro
della Voce" and we had 2 repertories: one based on songs from all over
the world called "Canti dei cuori dei popoli" (songs from the hearts of the
people) and one based on vocal experiments acted in theatres and based on a
script of poems written by Eleonora Fumagalli titled "Anacoreta Urbano" (urban
anacoreta) which was even the "Dramaturg" and regiest of this strange group of
actors and singers.
MY ARTISTIC MANIFESTO
I've studied
Musicology, especially Ethnomusicology and Anthropology of Music. Contemporary I
began to be interested in Theatre. First of all because theatre is a protected
place in which different languages, different forms of expression are
able to communicate each others. A place of liberty.
I always felt limited when I played
only the bass. Probably because I have huge technical limits and because I've
never had a teacher or I've never frequented a good Bass School. But not only
because of this reasons. Surely I'm not a "pure" Bassist. My concept of a
"show" is that everything you do on stage is to be understood as show, as a play,
everything does sense. Even if you do nothing (as teaches The Living Theatre
Group).
I began to use theories and normal practices of the theatre in music. Even when
as a composer. I usually don't "write" my music, I "act" it. Let me explain this
concept: often my starting point in composing is an emotion, a sound or a
breath, or even a way to move, to walk, or to dance. So, if we want to use the
term "write" music, I write music into my body. The body has it's own memory.
Sure I cannot execute the same identical music two-times, but I can evocate the
same emotion every time I want. That's my research, that's what I'm interested
in.
The last theatre group I worked with was called ROMPERE GLI ARGINI what means
"break the argins". I founded this group with my wife Eleonora Fumagalli and the
other two actors where Afrim Bejzaku, a Roma actor and dancer of "Ciceko"
dance (witch is a very unknown and sensual gipsy dance) and Samantha Zanarini,
an disable actress with motorial problems.
We worked basically on one play written by Eleonora Fumagalli called
"Anacoreta"
