Band Members: A Different Kind Of Country Ya’ll!Butch Morrison: “B-Cow can be described as country music spiced with African American influences†Anchored by the husband and wife team of Morris "Butch" Stewart and Brenda Mitchell Stewart who go by the names of Butch Morrison and Cocoa Hues, yip-hop group B-Cow also includes their sons, Leslie Stewart aka Lavish Mikell and Brandon Stewart aka Will Hitt along with a whole posse of great singers and musicians including T.C. Furlong and John Rice.
In spite of what many may think, African Americans have a long, rich history with country music that stretches back to its inception. Hailing from a musical family, Butch's composing credits include “The Oprah Winfrey Showâ€. The themes he composed for the talk show superstar, the snappy "Get With The Program" sung by Patti Labelle, the Countrified "Texas Style" and the jubilant "Run On" had a combined total run of 10 years. Other themes Butch have written include those of the nationally syndicated radio shows "The Tom Joyner Morning Show"
("Oh Oh Oh", it's now in its 13th year) and “The Doug Banks Show†as well as the theme for PBS-TV's "The Tavis Smiley Show", all done through Butch and Brenda's music production company, Joy Art Music Inc. If there's any question that the Stewarts are doing this as a fluke, a charming photograph attests to that, showing Butch, Cocoa and their small young-uns dressed in classic Western attire with Will "getting the drop" on his teddy bear. In 1993, Butch was working on some tracks for his wife, when he sensed something special. "When we were recording the song, "Sweet Like Dat", it began to take on this cool, unique country vibe. Then we wrote another song, "Kissing Tree" and it also had this country flair, before we knew it, we had a product that people were responding to". "One of the things I love about country music are the lyrics", he adds, I’m also way into the live band aspect of it, the B-Cow sound is spacious and big the way this new midwest country sound oughta be. Yep, bigger is better."
After greatly-received appearances at the First Night Evanston and the City of Chicago's, “Taste of Chicago†festival in July 2006, B-Cow has generated attention. After 28 years of being "studio rats", the Stewarts find themselves emerged in a dream fulfilled as the family leads a stampede of fellow talented folks to the new territory of live stage work before appreciative audiences, who instantly like their original songs. The mid-tempo galloper "Paw Paw" is laced with heartbreak with lyrics that say: " Paw Paw said a man ain’t suppose to cry/now I'm wondering why why why these tears keep falling from my eyes/since my Baby said bye bye bye". The heart-tugging ballad of "Anna Lee" speaks of redemption as an outlaw hangs up His six-shooter for the love of a small town girl. The surefire crowd pleaser "Squur Dance" deftly combines the good time feel of a good ol' hoedown and the bringin' it energy of hip- hop. The bouncy warmth of "Joyful Expression" expresses the cuddly comfort of fine fidelity. With the plush, pull-and-push bump of the last spin of a late night jukebox, "Sweet Like Dat" glides along on sinewy slide guitar and crunchy Organ.BCOW - PAW PAW
