EDGAR BREAU

About Me

Edgar Breau is a singer/songwriter hailing from Hamilton Ontario, Canada. His first experience in the recording studio was with Dan and Bob Lanois in 1974 at the basement studio called Master Sound Studios in Ancaster Ontario where the two brothers lived with their mother. At the time Edgar was the singer, lead guitar player and principal writer in the futuristic punk/psyche band Simply Saucer. Founded in 1973, Simply Saucer was playing what could only be described as groundbreaking rock and roll music. Influenced by artists like the Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, the Stooges and British prog bands like Soft Machine and Hawkwind, Simply Saucer were perhaps the first Canadian band to perform what would later come to be called proto punk music, joining rock pioneering artists like The Modern Lovers, Television and Patti Smith.

The six demos recorded at Master Sound were in a style of music ahead of its time and the major record labels in the country declined to sign the band to a recording contract. It would only be much later that they would see the light of day. In 1989 “Cyborgs Revisited” was independently and belatedly released as a limited edition vinyl recording. It included the original 6 tracks along with a now legendary live show recorded atop Hamilton's then new Jackson Square Mall. Critical acclaim followed and continues to grow, culminating in a prominent place in CBC journalist Bob Mersereau's “The Top One Hundred Canadian Albums”. Finishing 36 was a staggering achievement for a band that never had a commercial release of their music at the time they were together.

After the original Simply Saucer disbanded in 1979, Edgar Breau turned his attention to acoustic guitar and creating original material as a solo artist. Influenced by the playing style of John Fahey, his open tuning compositions are quirky and eclectic. Also heard are influences like Ray Davies, Nick Drake, English folk acts like Pentangle, country blues icons such as Mississippi John Hurt and Latin voicings derived from Brazilian guitar stylist Bola Sete.

Since 1979 Edgar has performed his original material solo and with backing bands, including tours of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia promoting his 2004 compilation CD, “Canadian Primitive”.

A new recording entitled “Patches of Blue” is currently in production at Michael J. Birthelmer’s Chatham Garden Studio, and is due for release in 2009 on Flying INN Recordings.

Edgar's latest recording, "Shadows Of Ecstasy", is now available as an online release from New York City based Anthology Recordings . Backed by Peter Lacey on drums, Jeff Bakalar on guitar, and Simply Saucer bassist, Kevin Christoff, Edgar Breau Band will be performing in support of the record throughout 2009.
