About Me

d’Orpheus Miles was born in Paramaribo; the capital of a small South American country named Suriname. From a very young age he expressed interest in music and other types of art. At age five he tells his mom of his dreams of becoming a singer, but her explanation of how hard he would have to work to be in the top, quickly leads the young boy to forget about this dreams. However needing an outlet for his creativity he starts drawing as well as picking up a love for reading, which would eventually get him exposed to the works of various well known local writers like Gerrit Barron, Ismene Krisnadath, Cynthia Mc Leod and the national poet, Dobru, a very patriotic man and family friend, who has a big impact on him. At the age of eleven he starts writing poetry in the light of his own patriotic ideas and very much influenced by Dobru and other revolutionary personalities. Remembering his early dreams he also starts writing songs and forms part of various boy bands, naming “After Before”, whom he records a song with, written by him and of which two of its members are now vocalists of Suriname’s most popular accapella group: “TRU”.After leaving for Cuba to study Chemical engineering, he is immediately picked up in the Hip Hop scene in Cuba, becoming best of friends and brothers with Kumar, a very talented Cuban rapper aka El Menor. He performs with Kumar and his group, “Duros Como El Acero”, several times, and works on even more projects with him, often advising and helping to form his younger friend. He also performs as the guest act on several occasions with the new group Kumar participates in “Familias Cuba Represent”.In Cuba is also where d’Orpheus teaches himself to play the guitar. He then participates in the “Festival de Cultura”, a festival for artists of all genres. With his first admission in 2004 he obtains a silver medal, performing in several places like the National Theatre of Cuba and La Riviera. For his second entrance he receives a gold medal the following year. In 2006 d’Orpheus Miles decides to go back to his home town to practice and study music, releasing his first single “You” on the Surinamese market for Valentines Day.
