The voices tell me that it's customary to put a little something about yourself in these things, so allow me to share a little of my truth - and perhaps a few little white lies...
I walk the deepest shadows, in the darkest night, in empty streets where nightmares stalk the innocent. Where the unclean thing lurks in ambush, I am there; where the beast stalks the unsuspecting, I am there. I am the thing in the shadows the monsters fear, I am the retribution they can never escape, I am the nightmare that haunts their rest.
I am Legend...
Hmmm, maybe not... And if Richard Matheson finds out, I could be in big trouble, but perhaps a few words about my philosophy might be in order...
Many people put great store in the path a person follows, be it the path of light or the path of darkness.
Both groups have overlooked the shadows...
I'm one of those who stand in the shadows, one foot in light, one foot in darkness - we know the twilight places where the paths run side by side - even where they cross and intertwine. We guard the stark shadows of the midday sun and the deeper darkness that blots out the starlight.
We follow no path but our own, but we use the tools of both sides to protect the innocent, to ensure the balance never swings in favour of the darkness. When an innocent strays, we are the shepherds; where darkness spreads, we are the torch-bearers.
We are shadow walkers, living two lives - charged with a duty we never chose and a destiny we cannot avoid. We walk alone - hated by the dark, distrusted by the light - our fate and our destiny is to walk the margin and never be truly part of either side...
"Don't seek us or seek to join us,
just accept that we are here
and pray you never need us..."
If you absolutely must have a label, I'm an unrepentant sci-fi geek who's managed to get more life than anyone should have to handle... I have a wonderful daughter (who twists me around her little finger), more friends than I deserve, a love of gadgets, horrific interests and a morbid curiosity.
Temperamentally I'm on the side of the slayers (vampires, zombies, trolls, teenagers - it doesn't matter as long as someone's slaying it!) but bound by oath not to intervene, mentally I'm still 18 and morally I'm wading hip deep in the gutter!
And if you're wondering about the gun, it's the renowned Mauser C96, the famous 'Broomhandle' - much beloved of comicbook superspies and pulp heroes and in my humble opinion possibly the finest machine pistol ever made! Mind you, she was designed in the days when style counted for something...
