Gia Carangi was born on January 2th, 1960. A child of a broken home, Gia began experimenting with drugs at an early age, just as she also began to accept her sexuality. She hit NYC in the late 70's and took the fashion world by storm. One of the world first Supermodels, Gia had a look and an attitude that was a definite change from the usual fashion models - full of spunk and a dark, smoldering beauty. Unfortunately, heroin addiction took control of her life, and her modeling career plummeted. After numerous attempt at sobriety, Gia finally reached that goal in 1985 at Eagleville Hospital in Philadelphia. Sober and ready to begin here life anew, Gia was diagnoses with AIDS, known then as ARC (AIDS Related Complex). Little was know about the disease in the mid 80's, and even less was known how to control it. Gia was one of the first women in the United Stated to lose her life to the AIDS virus.
It was Gia's dream to educate people, young and old alike, against the dangers of drugs, but she passed away before she was able to accomplish that. My life was changed by Gia. Had I not found Gia, related to Gia, I would still be in the midst of my addictions. However, I have been clean and sober for almost a year (on February 4th!).
We are here to carry on what Gia dreamed of doing.
God had a plan for Gia, as she said, though perhaps not in her lifetime. Gia cared. And we continue to care for her and about her.
