About Me

Greetings! My name is Gabe Maldonado. I started my musical learning at age 8 when my mom taught me to play the piano. Two years later, at age 10, I needed to pick an instrument for school and after debating between flute, violin and snare drum, I ended up picking the snare drum. I got my first full drum kit when I was 11 and began learning some of my favorite rock songs. I played the snare, concert bass, and tympani during jr. high in concert band and continued my kit playing in the high school jazz band where we won various local/state competitions.

Although I took a few jazz lessons in high school and went to a study program at Berkelee the summer after graduation, I’ve pretty much taught myself to play by learning and studying my favorite bands. I began playing in my own bands when I was 13 and have never looked back.

I have been playing in the Denver scene since 1991 and have recorded/performed with Happy Joe Pappy, Freak Hungre, Mentholatum, Bushtic, Stasis, Blind Harvest, Theta Waves Project, Protosonic and IZ (among others).

My style is mainly formed from progressive-rock, jazz and funk but I’m comfortable playing just about anything from country to experimental and beyond. I own acoustic and electric drums so I have a large sonic palette to draw from.

I’ve recently decided to attempt to learn tabla. Although this is probably the hardest thing I’ve EVER tried it’s also one of the most gratifying, and I look forward to years of learning and progression.

Music has been and will continue to be my passion in life. I love the creative process and the feeling of sharing these creations with people.
