RANT 001 Version 004
When it comes to music
categories, are usually pointless.
Loud, and painful doesn't always mean
a GOOD kind of loud and painful.
I enjoy equal parts of structure, and chaos,
and obviously there are artists
that do both of those things,
and more, and do it quite well.
I discovered the potential beauty of distortion
kind of by accident
when I used to work with only cassette tapes,
and home stereos.
( circa early 90's )
I remember pushing up the line in level
on a old Marantz deck way into the red.
The deck was hooked up backwards,
or was feeding back through my speakers
for some fucked up reason or another.
There was a delay pedal in there somewhere,
and it really freaked the shit out of my housemates
at the time.
The end result was a whole new dimension
to my mid-fidelity, homemade "ambient" music.
With the addition of a couple high end
Tascam 4-track units, and
a couple decent computers
I began working with distorted,
warped frequencies more often.
I appreciate both minimalism
and extremism in music,
and all of the possibilities in between.
I currently prefer experimenting
with small groups of familiar devices
that I manipulate rhythmically
from one end of a spectrum to another
rather than randomly stringing together shit
that might blow up my stereo.
Virtual 303, Moogs, Oberheims
via Fruity Loops,
Electro Harmonix, Digitech, &
of course, Boss
effects pedals manipulated in real time.
On the other hand I have big pile of speakers
in my garage
that are begging to be killed
with sound, and paint.
