"Orgy of The Righteous"
Moscow band «ORGIA PRAVEDNIKOV» («Orgy of The Righteous») was formed in 1999 by uniting the creative potentials of art-rock band "ARTEL" and a poet and a guitar player Sergey Kalugin. The peculiar sound of the band arises from the original combination of acoustic (flute and acoustic guitar) and electric (drums, electric guitar and bass guitar) sessions.
From the moment of their origin the band has declared their purpose as forming the new style, in which the most valuable and the most interesting achievements of the native musical tradition would be combined with the tradition of world rock music. This challenge was very difficult, because the heart of Russian musical culture is romance, with its exceedingly free breath. While rock music means first of all exact and thorough rhythm. But combination of incongruous things is the forte of the band, you can see it even in its name. It turned out that the usage of high-speed and very complicated rhythm elements of the rhythm- section, which are typical for progressive rock, gives in combination with broad and free -sounding tune, the effect which we can compare with permanent «ad libitum» of traditional Russian romance.
It is also typical for the romance to have specific but not «rock» vocal and the part of accompaniment, which is based on continual arpeggio and played on the piano or guitar. «Orgy of The Righteous» in a very unique way introduced arpeggio of an acoustic guitar in a heavy sound of a rock-band. This decision has formed the original sound of the project, which does not have any analogues in the world. It should be said that it is typical for a classical Russian culture (not only the musical one) to appeal to other cultural codes, epochs and traditions. «Orgy of The Righteous» sees in such openness one of the most precious sides of the Russian soul and tries fully to embody this universal vision. Allusions and references to Chinese, Arabian, Italian, Scandinavian music (besides usage of the widest palette of the styles and trends of modern music) – are the usual practice of the band. For example, the song «Turkestan Express» reminds a stunning musical trip from power-funk to metal, embellished with hard-rock and alternative techniques that all of a sudden give place to a stylized Near-Eastern bridge remarkable for non-typical combination of traditional for progressive-rock irrational rhythm with Pakistani flutes and percussion.
The musicians manage to combine hard-rock with graceful tarantella in the song «Sicilian Grapes», the stylistics of German drinking song and blast-bit - in «Shepherdess Adelfina», jazz and fierce trash bursting out into pseudo-baroque duet of violoncello and acoustic guitar - in «Abraxas».
It is also necessary to say that monumentality and symphonism are the peculiar features of the band. These features are rested upon Russian symphonic tradition on the one hand and upon the grandeur of the heavy music on the other hand. According to such vision the band is strongly attracted by great forms, which remind symphonic suites. The examples of the latest are such compositions as «Presence» , «Rex» (Requiem for the choir and the rock band), «Styx», «Das Boot». For the incarnation of the most mighty projects the band regularly extend their scoring, inviting choir and violoncellists, trumpeters and bagpipers.
«Orgy…» regularly plays in Moscow , performs on tour a lot and easily takes part in different festivals – whether they are folk-festivals or heavy - metal ones it doesn't matter as «ORGIA» appeals to people with absolutely different tastes for music.
The first album of «Orgy of The Righteous» «Catechumen, depart!» was released in 2000, the second one «The doors! The doors!» - in autumn 2005 and received many favorable reviews from critics and listeners. The band has also recorded the «White sail ship» concert album, the «The last warrior of the dead land» lead single and several side-projects, the most significant among which is the "Rosarium" album released in 2006 where the Crown of Sonnets declaimed by it's author, the front man, and accompanied by refined guitar miniatures is presented. The third album – «Fading Sun» was presented in April 2007 by two concerts - in Moscow and in St.Petersburg. During the St.Petersburg presentation there was a shooting of the concert which resulted in the release of double DVD «Solstice». Album «Fading Sun» according to the opinion of the audience and critics became one of the most significant release of 2007 in the genre of rock music and no doubt the most successful work of the band.
The band is planning to record a new album, to give a lot of concerts and also to participate different native and international festivals.
