What final thoughts dance behind the dying eyes of the beheaded?
Severance is an evening of theater that explores the romance, terror and regret that haunt us in our final moments. An abstract tour of human history, Severance delves into the thoughts of the recently decapitated. The play and the stories told there-in are based on the premise that the human head lives for ninety seconds after the moment of separation, and that in that final moment the mind continues to remember, ponder, and regret. The infamously beheaded, from Cicero to Marie Antoinette, Jayne Mansfield to John the Baptist, join a cast of victims from across time and humanity to present a bittersweet account of life on Earth, and the inescapable moment of death.
Adapted from a collection of short stories by Pulitzer Prize winning author Robert Olen Butler, these brief but urgent tales rend misery from mortality, carving enlightenment into a deadly truth.
Severance is an ensemble-based production merging abstract staging, dance, music and design to provide a striking profile of human history through the reft heads of the righteous, criminal, unlucky and insane. Developed by director David Jette and an ensemble of actors, this stylized production brings new life to literature, and a new definition of what theatre can be. The collection upon which Severance is based, which reads more like an anthology of poetic prose than a series of monologues, re-defines our modern day interpretation of death and presents a reality often ignored: that no matter the meaning of one’s life, it still must come to an end.
This event is a production of Brimmer Street Theatre Company in association with New Renaissance Theatre. For more information visit our sites at www.brimmerstreet.org and www.myspace.com/newrenaissance.
