I am here for Friends

About Me

I'm a pilot and a teacher. I climb mountains (slowly) and kayak (slowly) and do things outdoors. I'm a very independent person, and I like to do exciting things that I can take pictures of and look back on to say, "wow, both me and my car made it through that!"I am an idiosyncracy. I will tromp through the woods one day, and wear a feather boa and heels the next. I go to Las Vegas and don't gamble. My job involves talking to people all day long, but I can be shy around people I know well. I can switch between "instructor Katie" and "normal Katie" at a moment's notice. I am a lifelong student, and have been known to ask incessant random questions in a quest for more bits of knowledge.

My Interests

Aviation, math (and all things nerdy), hiking (and everything outdoors).

I'd like to meet:

Other pilots; other "mountaineers" (or outdoorsy people); boxed-wine drinkers or plastic-cup-o-beer-with-your-name-written-in-sharpie drinkers (do you also have a full set of beerfest mugs?); someone who will either come with me, or let me go out and have my adventures alone, but still know that I love them and be there when I come home ...Get off your lazy butt and go outside to play!

Music:

In the car: Whatever's on the radio, mostly alternative rock/liberal talk/NPR/oldies
At home: XM Comedy Channel 150 (Ha!), or see "In the car" section
On the dance floor: Something with a beat ('70s/'80s dance), but nothing that encourages slimy guys to gyrate against me

Movies:

Action/adventure, drama, documentary. No romance flicks.

Television:

Anything CSI-ish, or any of the million variations on "Law & Order." Lots o' nerdy stuff on OPB.

Books:

Yes! Any and all. I think I have enough so it qualifies as a library.

Heroes:

My mom (for raising myself and my sister alone).
Cancer survivors, victims, and their families (for being the strongest people I know).

What are friends for?

Life is good, if for no other reason that I feel at this point that I am surrounded by more people who care about me (in however small a way) than at any other time in my life. Ironically, this comes ...

The passing of a friend.

A friend of mine passed away this weekend. Cancer. We were not so close that news of his death makes me cry, but close enough that I feel I could call him a friend, and close enough that the news made...

I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys-R-Us kid!

I am adrift. I look around and see familiar surroundings, but my brain tells me they are foreign; "it's not yours any more." My house is in a perpetual state of chaos right now, as I pack up to make...

The goose and the gander ... and the harem

Geese mate for life. If their partner dies, the remaining goose lives the rest of its days alone. One shot, and that's it. Why should humans similarly pin their hopes on finding just one person with...

A brief history of time, or, what I've done since high school

My forthcoming 10-year high school reunion has made me all introspective lately, and wondering what I've really done over the past nearly-decade. A fellow BHS class of '97 grad recently posted what h...
