..The Get don’t play by the book! Consider:
• The guitarist, despite playing for 30 years, still doesn’t know a chord.
• The Get served its apprenticeship of 4 years as a 2 piece bedroom band.
• When the Get played their first gig, it was the first time the drummer had touched a drum kit.
• The Get sing songs about the Nuremburg Rally Jive, wearing dresses, daleks and riding motorbikes.
• The Get are back in action after 25 years even though they live 100s of miles apart, and they have written and recordedmore than an album’s worth of new material which is still fresh and bold and played with a punk/DIY/Rock'n'roll sensibility!.
In 2006, inspired by the first Southend Punk Reunion night, Gary tentatively suggested to Bruce getting up on stage again at the next reunion night. Very soon the classic line-up (minus Steve Whittock) was preparing for their first gig in 23 years! They gathered at Gary’s house at 5pm, rehearsed (Jon, slapping his thighs to keep beat), pulled together a new song and then headed for the venue. At 8.30 they were on stage kicking off with their anthemic new song, “One Note From Total Collapseâ€. A new chapter was born …
The Get also played at the 3rd Southend Punk reunion in April 2007, debuting three more new numbers and reviving some more Get classics. Geography and lack of equipment prevents regular gigging but watch out for the occasional rare live appearance. In the meantime, American based label Equation records is planning a comprehensive compilation of the original recordings. For details of the early period of The Get, check out the profile on Steve Pegrum's brilliant Southend Punk website:
