Born and raised in Jersey City, NJ G.Q. was a very active child who put all of his energy into basketball and soon developed a certain drive for it at an early age. He honed his skills while in grammar school and was quickly recognized for them; allowing him to play AAU nationally. At the same time, G.Q. began to develop a passion for music; basketball would no longer be his only claim to fame. At the age of fifteen, G.Q. (then going by Hollo) began rapping and by sixteen was featured on a mix tape by a local DJ that also featured Joe Buddens. Though he was excelling in both sports and music, he soon involved himself with the wrong crowds and developed this mindset of doing anything to make a dollar; something that he would carry with him as he entered Morgan State University and would be the cause of him quitting basketball all together. While at Morgan for a year and a half, he was no longer focused on the things that once drove him so he decided it would be best to go back home to pursue music 100%.Once back in Jersey City, G.Q. soon hooked up with local producer Fire, who put his focus into G.Q. completing a compilation album. Once he found the passion for music that he had discovered only a few years prior, G.Q. became a diligent and ambitious worker, doing anything that would make his dream a reality.During the process of recording his album, label president L.A. moved down south to try his hand at other business ventures, leaving G.Q. to hook up with an old friend for guidance and a foot in the music industry. That friend was Rich Trowers, who is the manager of promotions at Bad Boy Records.G.Q. is not an abbreviation. He states “it is the lifestyle and type of swagger I portray†and his a.k.a., Heart Throb of the Hood, was given to him by his female fans because of the love and respect he receives at home and everywhere he goes. His performance quality has the aptitude to move a crowd while his ability to switch up flows on any track and the confidence he exudes allows him to appeal to a very versatile audience. The quote that he chooses to live by is, “I’d rather be hated for who I am then loved by who I’m notâ€.
