About Me

Directions are a unique band. From their inception as a group, the main idea has been to integrate the best elements of a wide variety of music: namely jazz, funk, deep house, latin, and alternative music into a sound that emphasizes thoughtful songwriting, beautiful melodies, sophisticated harmonies, and a balance of improvisation and structured composition. The result is music that is deeply engaging, empathetic and emotionally honest, encompassing the spontaneity of jazz, the hypnotic pulse of house music, and the powerfully compelling craft of voice in song.

Directions are Benji Perosin (trumpet), Jason Kenemy (keyboards), Wayne Ogilvie (guitar) and Chantal Thompson (vocals). Conceived in 1999 in their home city of Toronto, the basis for their sound was as diverse as its influences, and it was obvious that the diversity that each band member contributed, when combined, made for a beautifully fresh and remarkable new sound. Once the core group became solidified with the introduction of vocals and guitar, soon afterwards, percussion, bass and drums replaced the DJ triggered, sampled bass lines and programmed drum beats, expanding the sonic possibilities of the now seven-piece group.Directions' captivating live show always succeeds in connecting with and inspiring their diverse and ever-growing audience, whether performing at dance clubs, festivals or more traditional concert venues. Some of the band's notable performances thus far include:The Jazz Café, London UK The Vancouver International Jazz Festival The Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival The Montreal Jazz Festival Habourfront Centre's New Music Series, Toronto Atlantic Jazz Festival, Halifax Pay's D'Oc and Eza Wear Wine Tasting and Fashion Show, Toronto JVC Jazz Festival, Toronto Canadian Music Week, Toronto North by North East Music Conference Du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival, Toronto FW Magazine Launch Party, Toronto NFB Interactive Film and JazzDirections continue to develop their unique blend of music. The group is always working towards expanding their horizons to a wider and more diverse audience across Canada, The United States, and Europe. In 2003, Directions joined London-based Diaspora Recordings to release their original material globally on a new live performance-based imprint, diaspora in Session. The album project has received remix treatments from the likes of Japan's Kyoto Jazz Massive, Detroit-legend Carl Craig, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez of New York’s infamous Masters at Work, and Toronto natives Middlefield. Armed with this stellar product, Directions will embark on a new journey spreading their word internationally in both recorded and live performance forms. It seems only fitting that the diverse sound of Directions be shared with as many people as can be reached. For booking or product information, please contact: [email protected]
