This project is still very much in a growth-process and this page, for now, functions as a place for concepts and ideas. I, Michel, am currently the only one participating in this but I hope to some day expand Arafúra to a grander scheme. I believe this will be possible if someone is willingly to take the time and dedication for it. I'm always willingly to talk to anyone that might be interested, so - don't be shy if you feel that urge.
- The first track '
Ouroboros' is a concept that is gathered from the ancient depiction of the repetitiveness of certain events; it's a snake chasing its own tail and closing in on the circle of itself. It's the mastered version [thanks to
Androgene Collective ] and it's featured on the label sampler of mine, all mine! records.
- The 2nd track on the player '
Hymn of Cleansing, Re-Growth, Re-Build and Re-Generation' is a skeleton of a bigger track, even though its simplicity has something to it. I'm still planning om reshaping this track in the future.
- The 3rd and 4th track, '
Malu Sketch.01 - Main Theme [Rough Drafts]' & '
Malu Sketch.02 [Rough Drafts]', are recordings I created when I sat down behind my Alexander Irmbach piano whilst missing Malu, my girlfriend, when suddenly these two themes came forth and I decided to record them with my crappy Olympus Voice Recorder [used for interviews and such - hence the awful quality - but it's the concept that counts]. Each track is played twice; once dry and once with a ping-pong delay and some heavy reverb. To me, these two tracks embody what she is to me and in the future I hope to have this track finished so I can present it to her.
- '
Dharma [Rough Sketch]' : On one night in September 2008 I had myself a little jam which was inspired by all things good and wonderful compressed into one single human being. [ Dharma explanation @ Wikipedia ]
Out of that this 'true' ambient [instead of what I've heard people call 'ambient'] guitar piece arose. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say it's a piece in the vain of hammock's latest album 'maybe they will sing for us tomorrow'. So, if you liked that record [which was really minimalistic] and you like anything in the vain of [guitar] swells, I'm sure you will appreciate what this has become. It's different than any other material that I've released before - but it's something that I've always been aiming for but couldn't do because of the lack of equipment [which is now no problem anymore]. Keep in mind, it's a rough sketch and the quality of MySpace doesn't do it much justice on top of it all.
- '
Staralasis [Drone]' : this is the guitar drone ambient piece that is the soft blanket of my new track, Staralasis, which is also the title of the upcoming EP.
- '
Nirodha [Acoustic Sketch]' : "
Now this .. is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering: it is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, nonreliance on it." This sketch is still very rough but kinda steps onto the grounds of some more acoustic, yet still very atmospheric, material.
There are plans to release the first EP, which carries the title '
Staralasis', somewhere in 2009 but in the meantime don't expect a lot of mastered songs since I'm right now in the middle of creating some new material and exploring what the possibilities are with my new setup.

Arafúra - Live @ Het Kwartiermakersfestival [2008]
These are two stripped-down versions of guitar-based ambient tracks I performed at 'Het Kwartiermakersfestival'. The first track is a rough draft of '
Staralasis' and the 2nd track is a rough draft of '
Dharma'. Sadly my amp broke down just before the gig so I'm playing an amp [Fender Twin] other than my own Fender Twin Reverb, this really didn't feel like it held my sound.
Besides that the camera didn't really record the drones that lie underneath these tracks well, that's mainly because Zeus [the camera guy] was so close to the amp which makes the drones [which in 'Staralasis' came from the PA] barely noticeable.
I hope you enjoy either way. The piano section of the performance wasn't accurately filmed so sadly I can't show you those.
And keep in mind, this was my first performance ever ..
