My name is Christy Mckinless.I'm from the Sunshine Coast, currently living in Caloundra. Im an Aboriginal Artist in which I have been for a little while now. I have been around Aboriginal Art for basically my whole life growing up in Art Museum's and Gallery's being part of exhibitin with my mother and I guess following her footsteps! I started painting when I was a young girl my mother is a very well known Aboriginal Artist - Joanne Currie Nalingu. So I guess this is how I got into it. I have travelled around to a few places overseas, Europe and France the main places in which my mother and myself had a sell out show.I grew up in Caloundra. Whilst I have been painting it was back in 1992 when I undertook a cultural reserach with my mother - Maranoa cultural Materials and designs from the Mandandanji People (Gunguri Language group) which is my current artworks with a contemporary twist with the bright colours and also the traditinal colours.I paint of the Maranoa Shield Design and Maranoa River. My mother grew up on the banks of the Maranoa River in a place called the Mitchell Yumba South-West Queensland. These stories have been passed down to me and I will pass this down to my own children. The Maranoa shield designs are largely based on intersecting diamond patterns and body paint lines. The oval shape of the shield itself is also used as a visual element. The idea of Waterways is referenced by linear designs of the river and clay pans.I have my own individual style, whilst my painting tells the story of "My Mother's Country and her Mother's Country." Instantly recognisable as Aboriginal Art, it speaks of the journey as an Aboriginal artist moving within cultures – artwork that holds to tradition yet speaks with authority of the here and now.
