About Me

Martha Avaleen Egan performs Celtic, sacred, folk and classical music on the Concert C flute, Irish wooden flute and pennywhistle for festivals, weddings, church services, receptions and special events. She is a fifth generation Irish American and has played the flute since her days as a band student in the Kingsport City School system and as a member of the Kingsport Youth Orchestra. She studied as a private flute student of the late Gene Orner. In the early 1980s, Martha became interested in the pennywhistle (Irish tin whistle).Egan teaches both group and private lessons in Colonial Heights, Tennessee near Johnson City and Kingsport in northeast Tennessee. Colonial Heights is located next to beautiful Warrior's Path State Park in Sullivan County, Tennessee.****She offers flute repair and other band instrument repair at her shop in Colonial Heights. Her repair training includes study with Jonathon Landell (Vermont Guild of Flute Makers) in Richmond, Vermont. Martha is an associate member of NAPBIRT.****She holds degrees in history and communications and has, for many years, enjoyed teaching classes in history and humanities at area colleges and universities and in high school social studies departments. As an historical writer and researcher, Martha is a contributor in the areas of business and industry, to the "Encyclopedia of Appalachia" "The Dictionary of American History" "The Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture" and "The Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance." Under the auspices of an NHPRC grant, she established a municipal archives for the City of Kingsport in 1993 and worked as City Archivist for a number of years.****Martha's CD of Celtic music performed on flute and pennywhistle, "The Dawning of the Day" features 15 Irish and Scottish songs.
