Starting some 30 sounds of the 70's + years ago in Petersburg, VA on Virginia State College's campus, three young men started on a musical journey that followed the sounds of the '70's. Rodney Dorsey, a native of Baltimore, brought a first tenor sound straight from the Softones, Eddie Kendricks and the Delfonics; Carroll Ellis, Jr, from Richmond, virginia handled the smooth second tenor, heavly influenced by The Spinners, The Stylistics and the Chi-Lites; South Boston, Virginia born Ray Crawley, second tenor with the vocal stylings of The Main Ingredient, The Moments, and Blue Magic.....
Begining as a accapella gospel quintet, know as Essence...the three fellas began perfroming on campus talent shows, then started to venture off campus into the supper clubs around the area...Not being content with just being a "regular" group the newly rename "EbonyDiamond, started to write, arranged and produce their own original material ....first recording a single as background vocalists on a track entitled "For As Long As I Live" with their mentor, writer/producer Bernard Smith....the guys along with a tight band began to perform the local club scene, but still always finding time to going into the studio a record another original track.
The years have passed with the fellas traveling and recording from New York to South Carolina, but never losing the sweet, soulful three part harmonies that they studied and perfected back in the hallways and rooms of the college dorms and took to the many stages and studios throughout the east coast.....the introduction today remains the same as it did in the '70's...Ladies and Gentlemen...singing those sweet love songs...let's welcome....Rod, Ray & Carroll.........THE EBONY DIAMOND!!!!
