The Modes were a long time staple on the Boston rock music scene. Playing in now legendary rooms like The Rat, The Paradise, Jaspers, Bunratty's, The Channel, and more, The Modes were part of the fabric of the eighties Boston Rock sound which produced The Cars, J. Giels, and Boston, to name a few. Though numerous other bands took on the same name decades later, as best we can tell, The Modes from Boston in the eighties were the first and original.
Founded by singer guitarist Steve Davidson, the band was already gaining widespread acclaim and airplay on top Boston radio station WBCN upon releasing the first single, "Try My Best." Though the record was recorded with a studio bass player, Jeff Thomas, the original performing line-up was Davidson with Charlie Molinari on drums and Steve "Bunky" Mulkern on bass. The band gained enough recognition to draw the attention of Ken Kozdra, already a promising singer songwriter on his own, to join forces with Davidson and forge what would prove to be the core duo that would bring the band to national attention. Later supporting members also included Andrew Mazzone, Tom Majors, Wess Nagy, and Phil "Deug" Provost.
After winning an award from Warner cable for best video of the year, the band was scooped up by prominent Muscle Shoals producer, Terry Woodford, and New Yorks ICM agency, and played to a sold out show at New York's Ritz. With numerous label scouts in the audience the band was quickly signed to release their full length debut album.
On the brink of The Modes explosion on the national scene, a few mangement missteps brought the band to an unexpected implosion that kept the world from hearing the release of the LP for years to come. Ultimately, the music of one of the best bands of the eighties was released on the GB Music label and is now available for purchase on line titled "The Modes Legacy Collection. "
