About Me
Jaime RodrÃguez was born in La Union, Colombia, and grew up in a musical family in the city of Cali. At the age of twelve, he began his musical studies at the Cali Conservatory, continuing them at Universidad del Valle. He took part of the choir of the Universidad del Valle, directed by Vicente SanchÃs, with which he gave performances in Colombia, Ecuador, Brasil and Spain.
In 1981 he moved to Spain and studied at the Conservatory in Seville. It was here that he began the Latin American music group, Grupo Cali, later bringing it to the Netherlands. He gave countless concerts with the group in the Netherlands, Spain and France, producing and recording the LP 'Tierra'. At the same time, he began his studies in Latin percussion, and in composition and arrangement, at the Rotterdam Conservatory. After graduation he founded the salsa orchestra Rumbatá in 1990 and has been its musical director ever since.
He wrote different pieces and arrangements for Rumbatá. For the group’s jubilee programme 'Cuatro Estaciones de América’ he composed one of its four pieces himself. In 2003 he founded Rumbatá Big Band by enlarging Rumbatá to a 22 piece big band to play colombian music exclusively with modern jazzy arrengements.
¡Oye! Listen, the Dutch magazine for salsa and Latin music, commissioned him to compile the programme 'Salsa made in Holland'. He also did the conducting and revised the arrangements. He played and/of made recordings with the Chilean group 'Quilapayún' and Chilean composer Patricio Wang, the Latin American music groups 'La Banda del Sur' and 'Winanda del Sur' and the Dutch music theatre group 'Het Groot niet te Vermijden Dans en Show Orkest', Saskia Laroo and singer Beatriz Aguiar.
Jaime has been a producer of Latin music since 1993. In 1996, he began his own recording studio, 'Camina Music Studio'. As an interpreter and/or musical producer he realized numerous recordings. Every summer Jaime runs workshops in percussion and Latin music at the Stichting Buitenkunst [The outside art Foundation]. In early 2000, on a theatre tour of the Netherlands, he and his 'Jaime RodrÃguez Latin Music Ensemble' presented the music programme 'From Cuba to Colombia'. In 2002 Jaime and his Latin Music Ensemble presented a new music programme in Dutch theatres: 'Noche de Ronda' [Late night Walk].Profile Edited by MPS MySpace Editor 2.0
