About Me

..

Dave Moipolai (aka DJ Kinetic P) was born in 1976 at the capital city of Botswana (Gaborone) in Southern Africa. Dave began in the music business around 1989 with his brother and friends collecting mixed tapes, jingles, which were shared around like MP3s/CDRs these days. Armed with two turntables, a tape player and a 2 channel mixer and little all else, he delivered his passion and soul through the house music sounds….

“House music and the art of mixing was the thing I pursued with a passion to date...”.

He played his first turntables when he was about 16 during the time when he was in school at Naledi High School where he completed his O’Levels, and at the age of 19 he was one of the youngest and most successful full time DJs in his city and performed in almost all the famous venues and parties in the city as well as in some in Joburg, Pretoria and Bop. He worked hard to find his technique and style until he reached top international DJ level.

GABORONE CITY (GC):

In the early 90s, Botswana government sent many students overseas on grants to study Science subjects, Engineering and Medicine in USA/UK. Most students would come back home to visit during their study breaks and they’d be loaded with US Garage on vinyl - they'd play them on the national Radio station (RB2) and that was during the boom of House music around the world. DJ Ski & Sid (both Botswana were students at Howard University in DC during the early 90s), Cosmo and other local DJs were the pioneers in the region. The genre in Southern Africa became enormous and that spread throughout the region especially the music produced by Kerri Chandler, Mark Kinchen (MK), DJ Duke, Masters at Work to name a few. It was the deep rhythm, the soul and the beats within the underground sound that even now matters than the name of the record. Most of the DJs were students who did it part time when they arrived back or on holiday from USA/UK. Although GC is a smaller city than others in the region such as Joburg, Cape Town, Pretoria...and now that younger people have moved on to electro, techno, trance, jungle and all, like the city of Chicago, it remains the home for underground sound in the region.

The Underground house music genre was almost the only dance music being played or well received by the local people. I started during those days when promoters organized huge “illegal” picnic parties at "The Air Spot" in GC and in Bop (South Africa). Promoters would invite some famous DJs (Ian Segola and Oskido) from South Africa and some from Zimbabwe to play their house music vinyl. It was during the birth of US Garage/House music in Southern Africa.

Dave’s SOUND:

Dave’s style is influenced by the great producers/DJs of the world such as Lil' Louis, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Kerri Chandler, Trouble Men (DJ Fudge & Bruno Banner), DJ Yass in Paris, Karizma, Bob Sinclair, DJ Gregory, Larry Heard, Mark Kinchen, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Paul Johnson, DJ Duke, Jazzy B (Soul II Soul), Eric Kupper, E-Smooth, Masters at Work …to name a few.

“I shared a stage with some of the big names in the Underground House music industry and the lessons learned are priceless!”

Dave moved to Paris, stayed there for four years and made a number of very well respected producers/djs in the city. In Paris he’s had several guest appearances or residencies at Club La 11 Scene, Cafe OZ, Cafe de la Plage, Club Wagg, Queen, Cafe Puple Ace…and been a guest at Rex Club and at Radio FG.
