About Me

..
Hi! My name is Monica da Silva and I’m a Brazilian/American singer/songwriter living in Chicago.
I’ve been playing and writing music nearly all my life. My Brazilian mom started teaching me piano when I was 3, and then when I turned 6 or so, I started playing the flute. We always had music in our house. I remember listening to stuff like Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Burt Bacharach and the Beatles. I would run around the house and neighborhood singing, and probably being very annoying! I was super obsessed with the musical “Annie”. I think I probably sang “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” about a thousand times.
Since my childhood, I’ve been pursuing my dream of being a singer and composer. I write all types of music. I love creating something from nothing, and watching it evolve into something special. Music really is what drives me and keeps me company. No matter what I’ve gone through in my life, it’s always been with me.
The past few years, I’ve been living in Chicago. I try to get back to Brazil at least a couple times a year. I really miss the country, the lifestyle and the people. Being Brazilian has really influenced my music. People there are just so “alive” and happy all the time. Music is around them and inside them. I love that!
Right now, I’m involved in two projects. One is a Pop/Rock band that plays music in English, Portuguese,Spanish and Italian. I just put out a CD called, “Miles From Nowhere.” If you’re interested, you can pick it up on iTunes or CD Baby. My music has appeared on MTV, CBS and ABC, and in a couple indie films. I’m in the process of doing a couple music videos, and I plan on doing versions of the videos in Portuguese and Spanish, as well as English.
My other group, the Monica da Silva Quartet, performs Bossa Nova, Jazz, and Samba. We play both standards and originals. I’ve been writing a ton of Bossas lately. I’m going to begin recording a CD of this material very soon.
This year I will be playing at a bunch of festivals, such as NACA Mid America Conference, RedGorilla Music Festival and SxSW 2009. I'm also putting together a tour of Brazil for 2009.
If you’re interested in booking or information feel free to send me message. Thanks for being a friend! Monica

"Monica Da Silva and her band proved IPO isn’t limited to jangling guitars. Da Silva showcased light rock tunes from Miles From Nowhere with her full-bodied vocals, and on the irresistible “If You Push Me Away,” added a Latin beat that reflected her Brazilian heritage."
