About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas’ Myspace Editor V3.6 !
Hello there, time to unravel the enthralling saga that is me. lol, not really. I'm just an twenty-year-old lover of writing, political enthusiast, and music nut. I appreciate music from many genres, such as: rock, jazz, blues, alternative, soul, r&b, newgrass (revamped bluegrass), and contemporary folk. I seek out well-crafted instrumentation and lyrics - I don't just appreciate the voice or the beat, but the nuances of music, like the instrumental arrangements and the message or theme of the lyrics. I love to write, play piano, read, and discover new things.
I used to stress a great deal over school, but I've finally gained perspective: in the fall of 2003 my parents divorced, and if I came away with any constructive inspiration, it was that the pressuring adage that "I'm not good enough if I don't get straight A's" is terribly wrong. I used to be fixated on doing just that, but the turmoil in my life has made me rethink my priorities. No longer do I measure my self-worth by my grade point average. Although I've been through some difficult times, my experiences since leaving Drum Rock Elementary School have made me who I am today, and I wouldn't change any of them. For instance, I wore a back brace for scoliosis in junior high, making me the object of adolescent taunting and crushing my self-esteem. I cannot fathom how anyone can take twisted pleasure in humiliating and degrading others - it's frightening how devoid of conscience some people can be.
This is a quote that I live by: "Ignorant people talk about PEOPLE, average people talk about THINGS, but wise people talk about IDEAS." I try to ignore any rumors and gossip that I hear, and I do my best to give people the benefit of the doubt, because I know what it feels like to be berated and judged by ignorant people. What I mean is, often the people who have judged me did not have any idea as to what was going on in my life. No one has the right to judge people, and passing judgment is particularly damaging when you do not have all the facts - when you make assumptions about people based on their appearances or their actions, without having the slightest comprehension of what their lives are like. This is what so bewildered me in junior high - I never bothered anyone, and I certainly did not ask to wear a plastic back brace and pull a rolling backpack down the hall while everyone else had to carry their books - yet people felt the need to be inexplicably cruel to me. I'm not saying this as a sob story to attain sympathy, because I'm over that period in my life and I've moved on, but just as an example of how people make judgments and berate people whom they don't even really know. I would think to myself, "They don't even know me! Don't they stop to think, 'Gee, there might be a reason why she's taking the elevator and pulling that backpack that I don't know about'?!" But these people either lacked the reasoning skills to consider the possibility that I might be dealing with problems of which they were unaware, or they lacked the compassion to care.
Later on, in high school, one of the kids who had harassed me in junior high crossed my path again, and I had come to terms with my situation enough to say something to him. I still pulled a rolling backpack because I had undergone back surgery, and every day when I came into math class, he taunted me about that backpack. I know, really clever, right? His friends would chuckle at his oh-so-ingenious taunts, and I felt that old humiliation and degradation returning, but I kept my mouth shut at first and did not acknowledge his existence. But one day, he was particularly relentless, and I couldn't take it anymore. I turned around, looked him right in the face and said, "I had back surgery; that's why I need to use this backpack. I'm SO sorry my backpack is bothering you." I spoke loudly because I did not care if anyone heard - I WANTED them all to hear. I could feel my eyes welling up and the color rushing to my face, but I turned away from him before anyone could notice. Now you'd think that any normal, feeling human being - even an arrogant moron who liked to hurt people to make himself look good - would recoil a bit and shut up. But this person did not. He just offered some asinine comeback like "You should be," and I was floored. And the comments did not stop. They continued every day as before, and I was now struck by the extent of this person's amorality; I could no longer ascribe his behavior to ignorance, because he now knew what my situation was. Soon after, I asked my teacher to move my seat across the room so that I could get away from him. That same year, when I stopped using a rolling backpack, this person stopped making comments to me. To this day, he has never said anything to me since I stopped using a rolling backpack. How pathetic is that? That backpack provided the only material that his witless self could come up with to make derogatory jokes about me. Anyway, I have gone into more detail than I had planned, but the point is that some people are cruel out of ignorance, but others are cruel because they just have no conscience, and I think the latter is the more frightening type of cruelty. Ignorant people can be educated, but amoral people are out of reach - they're too far gone. Just like Kurtz in Heart of Darkness, amoral people cannot be appealed to and shown the error of their ways, because they have no conscience. I'm glad to say that I am the antithesis of this type of person - I've got too much conscience sometimes, it seems. I worry too much about doing the right thing. But I'd rather have an overactive conscience than none at all.
