This page is dedicated to resolute action to stop the proposed Pebble Mine in pristine Southwest Alaska. The gold-copper open pit mine, potentially the second largest on the face of the planet, would be sited at the heart of the world largest sockeye salmon fishery. Toxic water pollution and habitat loss could decimate the fragile Bristol Bay ecosystem. The wild salmon from Bristol Bay represent a third of all salmon caught in US waters, and 12% worldwide.Equally as unacceptable is the risk to thousand-year old cultural traditions practiced by natives who would have to change their way of life dramatically to adapt to the mine. Fishing and hunting are the main means of subsistence for thousands of natives in the region, and the mine could force them to abandon their proud heritage.The mine is a bad idea in a terrible location. The risks are too high. The Oppose Pebble Student Action network is a community of students, educators, and campus leaders organized around the central premise that we should not stand idle while renewable resources and cultural identities are destroyed for the glint of dirty gold.Please use this page to launch your own investigation, form your own opinion, and let our leaders hear it!Our voice is your voice!!! All those who value perpetuation of natural systems over unnecessary development of our public lands. Those drawn to action through outrage over human greed. Those willing to give a voice to the voiceless - no matter the circumstances or odds. Also, I'd like to meet a politician with the same values who is willing to listen and act with due passion.
