EXETER RESPECT IN MORE DETAIL...
Exeter Respect Festival is the city's annual celebration of diversity, using the full range of performing and creative arts as a way of promoting multi-cultural understanding, and saying no to racism and all forms of prejudice. The Respect message is a simple one: racism and prejudice often spring from fear, and fear is often based on ignorance, so let's overcome ignorance by getting to know one another and sharing not shunning our cultures. One of the best ways to get to know someone is to enjoy yourself with them, hence our celebration of diversity and adoption of the Commission for Racial Equality's simple but effective slogan: All Different, All Equal!
The UK's first Respect Festival took place in London two decades ago and there are now Respect Festivals all over Britain - and in other countries too. Each one is different but the message is consistent. The first Exeter Respect Festival took place in 1997 and in 2003 we adopted the format we have built-on successfully ever since: combining stunning arts events with wide-ranging community activities across the city, culminating in our massive celebration at Exeter Phoenix. We have have increased the range and quality of our arts events and community engagement and Exeter Respect 2008 promises to be our best yet!
