About Me


Matthew Dewey is a composer and singer based in Hobart, Tasmania. He holds a Bachelor of Music in composition from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and is currently studying towards a Master of Music Technology through the graduate school of the University of Newcastle. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by groups and companies including: The New York Miniaturist Ensemble (USA - performance at the Lincoln Centre), Contemporanes ensamble de guitarras de Monterrey (Mexico), IHOS Music Theatre laboratory, the Seymour Group (Sydney), the Sydney Children’s Choir, the Old Nick Company, and by musicians including William Lane (Violist), Joshua Rubin (Clarinetist – International Contemporary Music Ensemble), Harry Spaarnay (Bass Clarinet), Sarah Jones (Soprano), Christina Sonneman (Harp) and Ben van Tienen (Pianist and Choral Conductor – Sydney Children’s Choir). Matthew has worked as a composer, orchestrator/arranger and performer for various theatre companies and organisations including: Thodos Dance (Chicago), Ice Breaker Productions (Adelaide), the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, IHOS Music Theatre and Opera, Terrapin Puppet Theatre, 10 Days on the Island, Old Nick, Lucy Who Productions, Soaring Arc Productions (Sydney) Hobart Rep Theatre, and Ideal Media.

Influences: Brahms, Glass, Schoenberg, Bach, Dowland, Mahler, Hindemith. Early Stravinksy, late Mozart, Debussy, Wagner, Varese. Adams, Reich, Glass, Billy Joel, Nirvana, Norwegian Hardanger fiddle music, Georgian folk singing, the operas of Constantine Koukias, Alban Berg. Miles, Dizzy, Zoot Sims, Gil Evans, the Duke and St. John Coltrane; I really like Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman.
Sounds Like: Matthew Dewey's music has been described as many things from "Beautiful, lyrical and delicate" to "Dramatically compelling". His works range widely in their scope and style from the "Rhapsodic", to symphonic, to sound worlds where "haunting medieval echoes merge with minimalist repetition”.He has been described as having a "fine ear for vocal writing" and a "precise mind for harmony".
