Kurt Cobain was the founder and primary creative force behind the rock band Nirvana. In 1994, pretty much at the peak of his fame, he killed himself.Cobain was born on 20 February, 1967 in a little town in Washington called Aberdeen. It's widely reported that he had a happy childhood until his parents divorced when he was eight. It seems unlikely that Cobain had such a binary personality. It is true, however, that the divorce was bitter and that it didn't help what looks like Cobain's naturally sullen, asocial disposition.At seven he was put on Ritalin. This started a lifelong belief that any difficulty in life could be solved with a pill. One such pill was Percodan which Cobain became addicted to in 1986. At one point he took a job as a janitor and several of the clients were doctors and dentists. He learned from his co-workers how to steal pills without getting caught. This must have been where he acquired the Percodans, which are very hard to get prescribed these days.1986 was a big year for Cobain because it was also the year he first tried heroin. Cobain suffered from very painful stomach aches which he sought relief from through various drugs. It was not until 1993 that it was determined to be caused by a pinched nerve. At that time it was treated and stopped being such an important aspect of his life. He continued taking the drugs, however.By the winter of 1990, Cobain was using heroin seven days a week. He felt that heroin made him more social--it made him feel less ill at ease. This probably was the case. Unfortunately, his friends did not like his use and they made it known. As a result, he became even more isolated. This is a typical story: the biggest danger of heroin is in people's perceptions of it.At his peak, Cobain was doing $400 of heroin per day--but never more. This was because he could only get $400 per day out of his ATM. Why exactly he couldn't write a check or go to the bank when it was open, is unclear.Cobain fought depression most of his life. In the end, it seems to have gotten the better of him. He shot himself in the head with a shotgun about a week after he nearly died of an overdose of tranquilizers and alcohol (often mis-reported as a heroin OD, of course). This was likely a suicide attempt. His mental state was certainly not helped by his wife (Courtney Love) and friends who tried to scare him into "dealing with his drug addiction" by performing an "intervention".There is much speculation about Kurt Cobain's suicide. Some say that he was actually murdered (see below for more information). Some say he was murdered by Courtney. In some ways, this is true. Instead of accepting Cobain's drug use, his friends and family tried to force him to get clean. Clearly, he was not ready to stop using. The chorus of voices telling him that he had to give up drugs could only have heightened his sense of despair.
