About Me

The idea justifies the means. Technology is flavour, not a purpose and the Khoiba is the evidence thereof. Behind its unsettled electronic vibrations lined by sounds of acoustic instruments is standing Filip Misek (guitar, keyboards), Ema Brabcova (vocals, keyboards), Petr Samal (bass guitar) and the changeable in time Drumkid. The Khoiba songs are born as a result of the joint ideas of Filip and Ema. The mass established as such is then blended and arranged by Filip, while Ema fills it with lyrics.Filip met Peter in the band called Hummingbird back in 1999 and he started the creative connection with Ema in the Roe-Deer, both being active there for some time. The first EP was recorded by Khoiba in February 2002 and in the same year they won the talent competition Jim Beam Music.Their debut Nice Traps was then released in 2004 under the Globus Music label "In short, Khoiba do a lot of quirky, fun, strange and unexpected things throughout Nice Traps, but it persists as a pop album, rightfully unashamed of its slick production and radio appeal. Nice Traps evokes an immediate emotional response, but it's almost impossible to put the experience into words. You can't explain Nice Traps, or any of its songs, in a simple thesis statement -- it's more like a spectrum of feeling. For Khoiba, this translates into an extremely accessible and surprisingly nuanced debut, and the promise of a fascinating career." wrote in his review of the debut Mike Meginnis from the Splendid Magazine. Regarding Ema Brabcová he expressed the following: "She's the sort of technically accomplished, cool (but not too cool) performer that makes a perfect anchor for such electronic outings, enhancing the more ephemeral, emotional qualities of Khoiba's dispassionate sound but never detracting from the moody, downtempo, essentially cold aesthetic they foster.”In 2004 the band also released an EP with remixes of the That Reason single followed by the EP It is All Recorded one year later. At the same time, in 2005 the band was moved under the wings of the German label Mole Listening Pearls, which gradually released their debut Nice Traps across the globe. Last year the Khoiba created its first DVD covering their live concert, selected video clips and “home” videos of its respective members which capture the segments of their view on reality in the original way. The Khoiba music also appeared in the soundtrack of the full-length film Restart, made by Julius Sevcik in the Czech-finish production in 2005. The original music of that film was composed by Filip Misek.Yet, the Khoiba activity is not only about the focused studio work. The same level of drive is also applied in the creation of the concert image of its songs being miles away from the mere reproduction. Each song goes to the stage dressed in a special concert arrangement. Apart from performing in the Czech republic and Slovakia the band was also introduced in Austria, Germany, Finland, Poland, France and the Netherlands. For the Berlin concert of The Cure in autumn 2005 the Khoiba was selected as a support band by Robert Smith.Recently the Khoiba is finalizing the works connected with its second studio album entitled Mellow Drama. It will be released this year in October under the Globus Music label in the Czech republic and Mole Listening Pearls in abroad.
