Biography
Sylvain Gagnon was born in Forestville, located in the east of the province of Quebec in Canada. At a very young age, he began to get involved in many musical, artistic and multimedia projects. He studied jazz piano with Jean Casavant at Alma College between 1997 and 2000. He was also the keyboard player of the original pop band Maskarad and he has also played in many clubs, venues and shows.
Between 2000 and 2003, Sylvain studied musical composition at the University of Montreal and jazz piano with Pierre Leduc. Sylvain is largely influenced by contemporary pianists such as: Bill Evans, Keith Jarret and Chick Corea as well as a number of others. In 2002, he started the production Tourneson with Marc-Antoine d'Aragon. Together, they have put a recording studio and worked with young musicians in Montreal, Quebec to build their careers.
Between 2003 and 2006, Sylvain has been the musical director for the North american tour of Cavalia. He has worked with Michel Cusson, composer in the project. Last year Sylvain performed as the keyboard player in Synfunia, the last show of the Swiss circus, Salto Natale. In this project, Sylvain has worked with Guy Caron, the director of Dralion from the “Cirque du Soleilâ€, as well as with the composer Scott Price.
Sylvain is playing with WAZA, a band conceived with Eric Boudreault in 2004. WAZA was inspired by a diverse array of influences, with one goal in mind: create a contemporary type of jazz. To that end, recording sessions featured some 15 prestigious guests including John Patitucci, Michel Donato, Ronald Di Lauro and Alez Acuna, to name but a few. Last month they formed a trio with Jean-Francois Langevin on bass at the CBC/Best Buy scene of the Montreal International Jazz Fest. They have been nominated for the General Motors Grand Jazz Award and the Galaxy Rising Star Award of the CBC.
These days, Sylvain is composing a soundtrack as well as playing keyboard on Cirque Maroc in Ottawa and for Rodrigue Tremblay "Chocolat".
