In 1919 it was anounced the Pantheon Theatre would be built on the corner of 5th and Main in Vincennes, Indiana. Two years and $225,000 later it was completed. The Pantheon was built to seat 1200 people in air conditioned comfort. One of the highest paid interior decorators in the world was hired to supervise the decorating of the theatre. The Pantheons interior was highly embellished with ornamental plaster, draperies and painted details, such as the birds of paradise. Over 6 miles of electrical wiring and 15,000 feet of rope for rigging were installed. With its large stage and 11 dressing rooms the Pantheon was the only facility in this area that could handle road shows from Broadway in New York. In the late 1950's and early 1960's people started to stay home and watch T.V. As a result the Pantheon closed its doors in 1961 and was turned into retail space. The Pantheon remained retail space until 2006 when a 501(c)3 non profit corperation was formed called the Pantheon Theatre Company. The Pantheon Theatre Company purchased the building in April 2006 and has been working to restore the Pantheon to its 1921 glory. If you would like to help with the project or would like a tour please contact Travis S.
