About Me

Jolivette Anderson 'the poet warrior' is a theatrically trained performance poet / theatre artist and lecturer. She has opened concerts for Patti LaBelle, Brian McKnight and Jonathan Butler. She has also shared her poetry before legendary speakers and activists including Minister Louis Farrakahn, Rosa Parks, Jeronimo JiJaga Pratt, Chokwe Lumumba, Afeni Shakur and others.Jolivette began performing poetry professionally in 1995 while living in Mississippi. She eventually grew to be the host of Southern Vibes and co-founder of Mississippi Vibes, an open mic poetry set.While hosting Mississippi Vibes Jolivette was active in the community by being founder and DJ for the Mississippi cipher Poetry Radio Show and the Reggae Jam Session on WMPR 90.1 FM, hostess for the EB and Company Jazz and Poetry set at Black Water Coffeehouse, project assistant for the Farish Street Heritage Festival, guest poet for the Arts Alliance of Jackson and Hinds County Tribute to Margaret Walker Alexander, Eudora Welty and Thalia Mara, Narrator for the Mississippi Tourism audio featuring Mrs. Pat Fordice (wife of Governor Fordice), poet working with youth in the Jackson Public Schools through West Jackson Community Development Corporation, organizer for projects at the Smith Robertson Museum, adjunct instructor at Tougaloo College, guest poet at Jackson State University and project coordinator for the Algebra Project and Lanier High School.While at Lanier High School, working for Bob Moses, Jolivette developed the My Mississippi Eyes Migration Project that took high school students on an intellectual, community and national journey to discover the connections between Mississippi and Chicago due to the Great Migration. Students collected stories of Mississippi Migrants to and from Chicago and wrote stories that told of their community's history and culture. The knowledge building component of My Mississippi Eyes is the D. Ciphers Language Migration Curriculum developed by Jolivette to meet the identity concerns of urban black youth in Mississippi and other parts of the world.Jolivette performs solo or with a band, One-woman theatre style, stand-up or concert.Carrying on the traditions of the past while working toward a positive future for African Americans and people of the African Diaspora is evident when Jolivette performs. She speaks of Love, War, God, Revolution and many themes associated with history, culture, race, womanhood, identity and class.
