Located at 121 Calhoun Street, on the south side of University of Cincinnati campus. (513)961-1578Dionysus opened January 28, 1977 on a winter day so cold that I75 was closed from here to Detroit. It was important to open on that date because the day before was my birthday and the day after was Kansas Day. The first two years I taught school in Detroit and came down on weekends and holidays. I had a lot to learn.
In 1985 I closed for a few months to decide if I really wanted to do this anymore. I was getting tired of everything we served. So I went to New York and to California, and looked around.
That’s when the deli case was added and the name became Myra’s Dionysus. I wanted to signal that it was a somewhat Greek restaurant but with other offerings from around the world. When I travel I get ideas for new dishes like Aji de Gallina Peru, Molè from Mexico or Flan from Cuba. What ever I see that I like, I try it here.
You may notice the hats hanging on our wall. They are all inspired by our different soups & made by Myra her self.
Perhaps because I had never worked in a restaurant I didn’t know that some things I tried were “unusualâ€. Like offering such seldom served things as Gado Gado and Tapenade. Or having eight soups available every day. Or training enough people to cook so that anyone, including me, can take a vacation when they choose. I like to have change and choices in my life and to give employees and customers a bit of that, too.
We change our soups & specials often. Please check our boards when you enter the restaurant to see what soups & specials we are serving that day.We are always featuring different artwork by local artist in our Dining Room.
The enthusiasm, responsibility, and abilities of the young people who work for me never ceases to amaze me.So many people have passed through here over the years. Every once in a while one of our former employees drops by or writes and I catch up on their life. Or they E-mail me from Taiwan or Korea.I’m a very lucky person to be in the position to be with such interesting people, both those who work here and those who eat here. I could never have guessed it would be so much fun.-MYRA GRIFFIN-
