The Random Family

About Me

The Random Family discovered each other in 2006 whilst wandering aimlessly around Liverpool's acoustic music secne. Having been suddenly re-united, the long-lost family unit began making music together...
Combining traditional folk instruments and arrangements with modern approaches to song writing, The Random Family sought to create a sound that expresses their own musical style and ambitions, whilst being steeped in the tradition and values that inspired them to learn to play in the first place...
Led by a core 4 piece band, The Random Family utilise 4 part harmonies, acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, tenor guitar, double bass, flute and clarinet to create their unique style and varities of arrangement...
The Random Family also run and host one of Liverpool's most popular monthly folk events. Taking place in an old converted church, ‘The Family Folk-Up’ showcases the best acts from the local acoustic folk scene alongside established and emerging acts from across the country. Notable visitors include BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winners Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting, folk legends Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, and most recently 2008 Mercury Music Prize nominees Rachel Unthank and the Winterset...
The Random Family have just released their second e.p. 'Caught in a Lullaby' and currently to be found playing gigs of all shapes and sizes all over the country...

"....the Random Family is really quite the lovely collective. Breezy, pastoral melodies carry winsome, wistful lyrics harmoniously compiled by four elders of Liverpool's acoustic scene in what proves to be an enormously impressive demo that makes everything, no matter what your troubles, seem alright. So warming is the oeuvre that it washes over your auricles, cleansing your brain and smiling at your soul. The Random Family, it seems, have been put on this earth to make your lives that little bit better, DON'T BE FOOLISH ENOUGH TO MISS THEM..."
ANOTHER LATE NIGHT, JUNE 2007
"...not only are they making brilliant music, but they’ve also built up a whole alternative acoustic scene around them..."
NERVE MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2008
"Jesus these kids had more virtuosos than The Band. Flute,Clarinet,Ukelele ,Mandolin,Acoustic Guitar, stand up Bass & the noise that comes out is gorgeous...Great vocals across the band & beautiful brass interludes in a couple of songs. They deserve a fucking massive pat on the back for trying to get someting different off the ground in the land of bad bars & knob-shines in trackies..."
SWINE MAGAZINE, JANUARY 2008
"EVERY now and again an event comes up that you just have to drop everything and go to. The Family Folk-Up is just that."LIVERPOOL ECHO, AUGUST 2008"There are a lots of young folk artists out there who need support and encouragement - the Random Family being one of the best"BBC 6 RADIO FORUM: SEPTEMBER 2008"They're a folk four piece who all take a turn on vocals and do a fine line in shufflingly beautiful melodies. Indeed, tonight they even came close to stealing the show from the headliners with their often dazzling harmonies."BBC MANCHESTER: HEDGE'S 3RD BIRTHDAY PARTY, NOVEMBER 2008"The Random Family play gentle acoustic folk-pop, the relaxed approach underpinned by highly accomplished playing"
FOLLY FOLLY FOLLY: RED DEER CLUB @ THE DULCIMER, JANUARY 2009"JANUARY is rubbish. It's cold, miserable and even without the credit crunch, we'd be penniless. So any event that's going to get people through the door for the next few weeks has to be something special. And I think I've found it: The Family Folk-Up is fast making a name for itself as one of the most interesting musical showcases in the city"LIVERPOOL ECHO, JANUARY 2008 MySpace Layouts Falling Objects Secret Notes Pimp Top Friends MySpace Codes
