Brian Burton, better known as DJ and Producer Danger Mouse leapt into the industries limelight in 2004 with his highly acclaimed and now legendary Grey Album. The Grey Album brought together the old and the new with an amalgamation of revolutions, this amazing mash-up of the British 60’s band the Beatles ‘White abum’, and popular hip-hop figure head Jay-Zs the ‘Black album’.
This album was originally distributed through friends and family for personal use but found its way to the public domain through the internet and distributed via the many file sharing networks on-line. The written media, such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone obtained copies of the album and extensively praised it.
However, the bubble had appeared to have burst for Danger Mouse when he received a cease and desist letter from EMI (owner of the sound recording from the Beatles works) late 2004 after being famously quoted for saying that ‘every kick, snare and chord is taken from the Beatles ‘White album’ and is in their original recording somewhere’. Danger Mouse obeyed these orders but fans and supporters of the project thought rather differently and with the help of ‘Downhill Battle’ they staged a worldwide protest. This day, infamously know as Grey Tuesday was the day that about a dozen websites put the Grey album up for free download on their site, it is alleged that over 1,000,00 people downloaded the album that day.2005 was a less turbulent year for Danger Mouse and allowed this incredible talent to flourish. This was to be a year of two incredible projects for Danger Mouse. He teamed up with MF-Doom to give Hip-Hop based following ‘Dangerdoom – The Mouse and the Mask’. He also worked with the gorillas to produce a more mainstream but no less diverse offering ‘Gorillaz – Demon Days’ where he teamed up with Damon Albarn (formely blur), behind the creations of cartoonist Jamie Hewlett to complete a cross media masterpiece. In 2006 Danger Mouse was to do something that no other artist, group or producer had done before him. Building on his already successful relationship with the internet as a distribution tool, he topped the UK Singles Chart with ‘Crazy’ on download figures alone, under the collaborative cloak of ‘Gnarls Barkley’. The album from which ‘Crazy’ appeared also hit the top of the UK Album Chats, ‘Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere’.
The other half of Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo, whose vocals shine on every track originally made a name for himself as part of the pioneering Dirty South rappers ‘Goodie Mob’, often singing the hooks and is found doing this on some of my personal favourites, ‘Soul food’ and ‘Black Ice’. Cee-Lo broke free from the Goodie Mob in 2002 to release ‘Cee-Lo Green and his perfect imperfections’, this album was never a commercial success and Cee-Lo went back to the studio. His second in early 2004, ‘Cee-Lo Green is a soul machine’, was a more commercial effort with big name productions from, timberland, Zaaze Pha and the Neptunes.
It was 2006 when Cee-Lo eventually found commercial success with his collaboration with DJ and Producer Danger Mouse and their collaborative effort ‘Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere’.
