Michael Black started singing for people in Lucca when he was ten years old in the church choir-He’s always had the love for music. Michael says, “I was born to be a singer. God put me here to teach the world about love.� A few of the artist’s that has inspired Michael are Jacob Miller, Bob Marley and Ottis Redding.
Michael moved from Lucca to Kingston at the age of 17, he performed in many talent shows and clubs with the mighty diamonds. He met the Mighty Diamonds while he was hanging around Randy̢۪s, an influential record store. Michael would go there to sell records by different artist̢۪s to make his money. He met many recording artists when he was there, such as Jacob Miller, Peter Tosh, Freddy Mc Kay, Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer plus many more. Jacob Miller became a very good friend of Michael Black and introduced him to Bob Marley.
Michael Black at 17, wrote, arranged and sang “Sailor Man�. It was recorded on the Jamburu Label in Jamaica.
In 1973- Freddy Mc Kay introduced Michael to the Solid Foundation Band. He ended up singing with them in a show in Madaveile, along with Freddy Mc Kay, Mighty Diamonds, Sonja Spencer, and many more. The Solid Foundation liked Michael Black̢۪s singing so much that they asked him to be their lead singer.
From 1973 until about 1977, Michael Black and The Solid Foundation traveled all through Jamaica, The Caribbean, Canada and London.
In 1979, Michael Black was part of Sun Splash at Jarrel Park in Montego Bay. Here he was performing with some of Reggae̢۪s biggest artist̢۪s such as Bob Marley, Gregory Isacs, Dennis Brown and even Stevie Wonder.
Up Through 1982, Michael Black moved to Chicago, Illinois. He started playing at the local clubs such as Wild Hare, Exodus, Club Dread, Club Negril and Billy Mulligans at The House of Blues he played with Burning Spear and also performed at Park West. Over the years, Michael Black has helped many young artists get their career started in Chicago.
